Chapter 8 - Smoke in the Archive

The acrid smell of burning wiring and synthetic insulation filled the third-floor archive in seconds. Thick grey smoke billowed from the ceiling vents, rolling across the mahogany bookshelves and obscuring the amber emergency lights in a dense, choking haze.
"Chemical smoke!" Marcus shouted, dropping into a tactical crouch and pulling a black respirator mask from his tactical belt, snapping it over his face in a single fluid motion. He slammed his hand against the archive’s smart-lock keypad, but the screen flashed a solid, glowing red error message. "The control panel’s been short-circuited from the master electrical hub. We're trapped."
Victoria dropped to her knees, coughing violently as the heavy smoke hit her lungs. The panic that had fueled her defiance moments earlier evaporated into pure, animalistic terror. She clawed frantically at the wooden base of the door, her fingernails splintering against the reinforced frame. "Open the door! Let me out! I can't breathe!"
Julian didn't panic. His tall frame remained steady amid the thickening fog. He pulled a heavy linen handkerchief from his suit pocket, pressing it firmly over his mouth and nose, and used his free hand to grab Victoria by the collar of her torn evening gown, hauling her upright before she could pass out on the floor.
"Stop screaming and save your oxygen," Julian commanded, his voice muffled by the cloth but cutting through the hiss of the smoke vents. He looked over at Marcus. "Can you override the mechanical locks manually?"
"Give me thirty seconds," Marcus yelled through his respirator, pulling a compact digital decoder from his vest and plugging it directly into the exposed wiring panel beneath the keypad. Sparks showered down as he crossed the data leads, trying to force a manual circuit release.
Downstairs, the muffled sound of the family panicking had turned into outright shrieks of terror as the smoke began seeping down the stairwells into the main foyer. Elena and the baby were trapped down there in the thick of it. The thought of the infant breathing in the toxic fumes sent a surge of adrenaline through Julian’s veins that bypassed all caution.
"If the door doesn't open in ten seconds, I'm taking the wall down," Julian warned, his dark eyes narrowing as he braced his shoulder against the reinforced mahogany panel.
"Hold on, sir! The bypass is taking the code—" Marcus grunted, his fingers flying over the miniature keypad of his decoder as the amber status light flickered from red to yellow.
On the floor, Victoria clutched at Julian’s trouser leg, her face smeared with soot and tears. "Julian... please... don't leave us here. Mother... mother set this up. She knew the fire suppression system was linked to the old security overrides."
Julian looked down at his cousin with a gaze colder than winter ice. "Your mother has been playing God with people's lives for decades. Her time is up."
With a loud, mechanical pop, the smart-lock on the archive door turned a brilliant, welcoming green. Marcus kicked the heavy door outward, sending it crashing against the hallway wall as a torrent of thick, grey smoke rushed past them toward the open stairwell.

Julian hauled Victoria out into the cleaner air of the third-floor corridor, but as they reached the grand staircase overlooking the foyer below, a horrifying sight stopped them dead in their tracks.
