Chapter 3 - The Crimson Ledger

The heavy leather-bound ledger seemed to absorb the light in the foyer, casting a dark, oppressive shadow over the polished marble floor. Richard’s eyes bulged as he recognized the insignia stamped in gold leaf on the cover—the personal crest of the late patriarch, a symbol reserved exclusively for financial audits and sealed family decrees. Color drained completely from Richard's face, leaving him looking like a corpse caught in a sudden draft.

"Where... where did you get that?" Richard stammered, taking another involuntary step backward until his tailored heels hit the base of the grand staircase.

Julian did not answer immediately. He let the silence stretch, allowing the heavy atmosphere of guilt and dread to suffocate the remaining defiance in the room. He looked down at Elena, who was clutching the white-wrapped baby with trembling hands, her bruised lips pressed into a thin, white line. The blood near her mouth had dried into a dark crust, a silent testimony to the violence that had just occurred under this very roof.

"You always underestimated the quiet ones, Richard," Julian said, his voice measured and chillingly calm. "You thought because I spent my twenties managing overseas assets and burying myself in corporate restructuring that I wasn't paying attention to the rot festering at home. You thought you could purge the inconvenient truths whenever they cried out too loudly."

Aunt Margaret tapped her cane twice against the floor, a sharp, commanding sound that broke the spell of silence. Her dark eyes burned with an old, hardened fury. "Enough of this melodramatic nonsense, Julian. That book contains decades of family business, private settlements, and confidential arrangements. It is not evidence for a courtroom, and it certainly doesn't justify turning your own family into hostages for a servant."

"A servant?" Julian’s voice spiked, the restraint cracking just enough to reveal the molten rage boiling beneath the surface. He took two long strides toward his aunt, stopping only inches from her face. Margaret did not flinch, though a bead of sweat traced a slow path down her powdered cheek. "You call her a servant, Margaret, but page four hundred and twelve of this very ledger tells a completely different story. It details a payoff made thirty years ago to cover up a forced adoption, a falsified birth certificate, and a terrified young mother who was told her child was stillborn."

Gasps rippled through the gathered crowd. Several of the younger cousins exchanged bewildered, terrified glances, completely unaware of the dark foundation upon which their inherited fortunes were built.

Elena raised her head, tears finally spilling over her lashes to carve clean tracks through the dust and dried blood on her cheeks. She looked at Julian with a mixture of awe and heart-wrenching sorrow. "He knows," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the mansion's ventilation system. "He actually knows everything."

Julian turned back to Elena, his expression softening instantly as he reached out to gently wipe a tear from her cheek with the pad of his thumb. The contrast between his brutal intimidation of the family and his tender care for the maid was jarring, a clear demarcation line dividing the executioner from the protector.

"I told you no one leaves," Julian murmured to Elena, before turning his gaze back to the terrified assembly. He flipped the heavy leather cover of the ledger open with one hand, exposing a yellowed document paper clipped directly to the first page.

"Every single person standing in this room received a quarterly dividend funded by the silence of that woman's family," Julian announced, his voice ringing with absolute finality. "And now, the audit is complete."

Before anyone could lunge forward to grab the book, the lights in the grand mansion flickered violently, plunged into total darkness as a deafening explosion echoed from the basement levels.
