Chapter 9: The Confession in the Rain

The rain poured in sheets against the reinforced glass of the precinct’s exterior observation deck, blurring the neon lights of the city skyline into bleeding streaks of red and amber. Julian Vance stood by the railing, staring out into the storm while Detective Hayes stood beside him, holding a steaming cup of black coffee that neither of them touched.
""They brought Mark Jensen in ten minutes ago,"" Hayes said, her voice competing with the roar of the wind against the glass. ""He broke under standard interrogation within twenty minutes. He didn't even wait for a public defender.""
Julian didn't turn around. His shoulders were slumped, the heavy burden of the past week finally settling into his posture. ""Did he admit to killing her?""
""He admitted to the setup,"" Hayes replied, taking a slow sip of her coffee. ""Clara orchestrated the whole thing. She planted him in the building using a duplicate maintenance key three weeks ago. The plan was to isolate Elena, coerce her into signing over power of attorney for the trust accounts, and then stage the murder to look like a psychotic break. Julian, they were going to frame you for first-degree murder, take control of the corporate assets, and disappear with Lily to a shell company in the Caymans.""
Julian closed his eyes, a bitter, humourless chuckle escaping his lips. ""I thought she was just an overprotective nanny. Elena tried to warn me. She told me Clara was watching her every move, logging her calls, tampering with her medications. But I thought Elena was just spiraling into paranoia. I didn't listen.""
""You let your corporate ambitions blind you to what was happening under your own roof,"" Hayes said bluntly, offering no hollow comfort. ""Your wife tried to protect your daughter from a predator you invited into your home because she had good references and a polite demeanor.""
""Where is Lily now?"" Julian asked, his voice cracking slightly for the first time.
""Child protective services has her in temporary custody while the background checks are cleared,"" Hayes answered, setting her cup down on the metal ledge. ""She’s safe, Julian. But she’s going to need a lot of professional help to undo the psychological manipulation Clara put her through.""
Julian turned away from the rain, his dark eyes meeting the detective's steady gaze. ""Can I see her?""
May you like
""Not tonight,"" Hayes said softly, reaching into her coat pocket and pulling out a small silver key ring—the original keys to the penthouse that had been logged into evidence. She placed them on the ledge between them. ""Go home, Julian. Clear out the ghosts. Because when Lily comes back, that penthouse needs to be a home again, not a crime scene.""
