Chapter 6: The Trust Fund Maze

The conference room of Vance Technologies occupied the entire thirty-fifth floor of the sleek glass tower downtown. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the grey harbor beneath a heavy overcast sky. Around the polished mahogany table sat three members of the corporate board of directors, their expressions grave as they reviewed a series of financial audit reports spread out before them.

Marcus Vance stood at the head of the table, clicking through a digital slide presentation that highlighted the company's Q3 cash flow metrics.

""As you can see, the recent negative press surrounding the tragic passing of Mrs. Vance has caused a temporary dip in our institutional investor confidence,"" Marcus explained smoothly, adjusting his tie. ""However, the legal team has successfully contained the fallout. Julian remains on administrative leave, but operational control has been temporarily vested in the executive committee.""

At the far end of the table sat Arthur Pendelton, the senior managing partner and largest minority shareholder, whose white hair and weathered features commanded immediate respect. He removed his reading glasses, letting them dangle from a silk cord around his neck.

""Containment is one thing, Marcus, but the police are executing search warrants on company servers as we speak,"" Pendelton said, his voice carrying the dry weight of decades in corporate boardrooms. ""Detective Hayes subpoenaed the financial records for the offshore subsidiary in the Cayman Islands. Specifically, the accounts linked to Elena Vance’s personal trust.""

Marcus paused, his finger hovering over the remote clicker. ""Those accounts are private family matters. They have no direct bearing on corporate operations.""

""They have everything to do with corporate operations when the seed capital for this entire enterprise was originally drawn from Elena’s family estate,"" Pendelton countered, leaning forward and resting his palms on the wood. ""If the probate court determines that Julian murdered his wife to prevent her from exercising her reversionary clause on those funds, the entire corporate asset structure becomes tainted by criminal proceeds. The board cannot protect him if the state proves premeditation.""

Meanwhile, three floors down in the private executive lounge, Julian sat alone in a leather armchair, staring at his tablet screen. The local news channel was running a live segment outside the county courthouse, where protesters held signs demanding a full investigation into the Vance household.

His phone buzzed on the glass coffee table. It was an encrypted text message from an unknown number: *“The audit is a diversion. Clara moved the primary ledger files to an off-site server at midnight. If you don't confess to the embezzlement by morning, the police get everything.”*

Julian stared at the screen, his thumb hovering over the delete button. He knew he hadn't sent the funds offshore. He knew Elena hadn't hidden the ledger either. Someone inside the penthouse had access to the master terminal—someone who had been watching every move he made since the day she was hired.
