Chapter 2: Threshold of Doubt

The morning light filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse did nothing to warm the cold air circulating through the master suite. Crime scene technicians moved with quiet efficiency, dusting the white marble for prints and packing away digital evidence into silver aluminum cases. Elena’s body had been taken down to the county morgue twenty minutes prior, leaving behind only the faint impression of satin against porcelain.

Julian sat on the edge of the velvet-upholstered bench at the foot of the king-sized bed, his elbows resting on his knees and his face buried in his palms. The bowtie was gone, and the top button of his white dress shirt was undone. Detective Sarah Hayes, a sharp-eyed woman in her late forties wearing a charcoal trench coat, stood a few feet away, holding a digital notepad that flashed with automated diagnostic reports from the smart home system.

""Mr. Vance, the digital logs tell a very specific story,"" Detective Hayes said, her voice devoid of accusation but heavy with professional skepticism. ""The internal deadbolts on the bathroom door were engaged from the inside using a biometric override registered exclusively to your wife. Yet, the maintenance records show that the override system was updated remotely from your office terminal at eleven last night.""

Julian raised his head, his dark eyes bloodshot and rimmed with fatigue. He looked older than his forty years, the sharp lines of his jaw softened by exhaustion and genuine terror. ""I run a security software firm, Detective. Remote access is part of my daily routine, but I didn't lock her in there. Elena had been... erratic for weeks. You saw the footage. She wasn't herself.""

""Erratic enough to brand her own daughter?"" Hayes countered smoothly, stepping closer. ""That’s what you want us to believe. But according to Clara, the maid, you’ve been threatening to file for sole custody and divest Elena of her trust fund shares. A divorce under those financial terms would have ruined you publicly. Isn't that correct?""

Julian clenched his jaw, the muscle ticking rhythmically beneath his skin. ""Clara is a domestic employee who has worked here for less than six months. She doesn't know the full scope of our marriage. Elena suffered from severe paranoia. She believed people were watching her through the mirrors. That curling iron wasn't an accident; it was the culmination of months of untreated mental decline.""

Down the hall in the nursery, Clara sat beside Lily on the window seat, helping the little girl apply a soothing aloe gel to the angry red burn on her forehead. Lily stared out at the distant skyline of the city, her small fingers tracing the fringe of her blue dress.

""Is Daddy going away?"" Lily asked softly, her voice barely carrying over the hum of the air purifier.

""No, sweetheart,"" Clara replied, her tone firm and reassuring as she smoothed back Lily’s blonde hair. ""The police are just asking questions. We’re going to keep you safe. No one is going to hurt you ever again.""
