Chapter 1: The Marble Trap

The silence in the penthouse bathroom smelled faintly of ozone and scorched keratin. Elena Vance lay motionless against the curved porcelain slope of the empty white bathtub, her white satin robe stained with pale dust from the shattered baseboard. A heavy diamond necklace caught the amber glow of the vanity lights, casting jagged reflections across the pristine marble floor where a smoking curling iron still hissed faintly against a puddle of spilled bathwater.
Across the room, Clara—the twenty-eight-year-old red-haired maid in her standard grey uniform—clutched seven-year-old Lily against her chest. Lily’s blue dress was rumpled, and a jagged, angry red burn mark marred the smooth skin of her forehead just above her left eyebrow. Clara’s breathing was shallow and controlled, her eyes fixed on the doorway.
Julian Vance stood in the threshold, his impeccably tailored tuxedo and black bow tie contrasting sharply with the grim reality of the room. Flanking him were two uniformed police officers from the city precinct. Officer Miller, a veteran with tired eyes, stepped past Julian and extended a ruggedized police tablet toward the middle of the room. The glowing screen replayed a digital loop of the security feed from the hallway camera: Elena’s methodical pacing, the locked door clicking shut from the inside, the raised iron, and the deliberate descent before Clara broke the hinges.
Julian’s face had drained of all color, leaving his dark hair slicked back against a clammy forehead. He stared down at Elena’s unmoving form in the tub, his mouth parting slightly before the words finally escaped his lips in a hollow, trembling monotone.
""She attacked me..."" Julian whispered, his gaze shifting back and forth between the officers and the woman in the tub as if trying to convince himself of a script he had never agreed to read.
Officer Miller didn't answer immediately. He knelt beside the curling iron, gloved fingers hovering over the plastic handle without touching it. The digital tablet in his hand kept looping the silent footage, showing angles of the master suite that revealed secrets Julian had spent years keeping hidden behind imported Italian marble and smart-home locks.
In the corner, Lily stirred in Clara’s arms. The little girl’s blue eyes were wide, brimming with a quiet devastation that belonged to someone three times her age. She looked past the officers, past the smoking iron, and straight up into her father’s stunned face. With a small, shuddering breath, Lily spoke the words that shattered the fragile illusion Julian had constructed.
""Daddy, she killed mommy.""

Clara tightened her grip, burying Lily’s face into the crook of her grey-clad shoulder to muffle the ensuing sob, while Officer Miller stood up slowly, his eyes narrowing as he locked gaze with the master of the house.
