Chapter 7: Whispers in the Nursery

The nursery was bathed in the soft blue glow of a nightlight shaped like a sleeping moon. Lily sat cross-legged on her white fleece rug, methodically assembling a puzzle of a forest landscape. Clara sat in the rocking chair nearby, knitting a grey wool scarf with slow, rhythmic movements of her needles.

""Clara?"" Lily asked quietly, not looking up from her puzzle piece.

""Yes, sweetheart?""

""Is daddy going to prison like the man on television?""

Clara stopped knitting for a fraction of a second, her needles pausing before resuming their steady click. She looked down at the little girl, her expression softening into an artificial warmth that failed to reach her eyes.

""Your father made some very bad choices, Lily. Sometimes, when adults do things that hurt other people, they have to face the consequences,"" Clara said, her voice measured and calm. ""You remember what we talked about, don't you? You remember what you saw in the bathroom.""

Lily stopped moving her hands. She slowly raised her head, her blue eyes reflecting the pale light of the moon lamp. ""I saw mommy holding the iron. But you told me to say the other thing when the police officers came.""

A sudden stillness settled over the room. Clara set her knitting down on the small side table, stood up with silent grace, and walked over to the rug. She knelt down until her face was level with Lily’s, her expression tightening into something cold and absolute.

""I didn't tell you to lie, Lily. I told you to tell the truth about what happened after mommy lost her mind,"" Clara whispered, her fingers gently resting on the child's shoulders with a grip that was just a fraction too firm. ""You want to be safe, right? You want us to stay here together in the penthouse where nobody can ever hurt you again?""

Lily nodded slowly, the fear returning to her eyes—not the fear of her mother’s ghost, but the quiet, suffocating terror of a child who realized she was trapped in a game she didn't know how to win.

""Good girl,"" Clara murmured, kissing the top of Lily's blonde head right beside the fading burn mark. ""Just keep repeating what we practiced. When Detective Hayes comes back tomorrow for your formal interview, you tell her that daddy was outside the door before it happened. You tell her you heard him shouting.""

Downstairs in the master suite, Julian stood in front of the mirrored bathroom wall where the tragedy had unfolded. He pressed his palm against the cold glass, staring at the faint outline where the technicians had dusted for prints. His phone buzzed again in his pocket. He pulled it out, expecting another encrypted threat. Instead, it was an alert from the home security system: *“Access granted to service elevator. Floor 32. User: Clara Miller.”*

Julian turned sharply toward the door, his heart hammering against his ribs. He crossed the suite in three strides, pulling open the hallway door just in time to see the service elevator doors sliding shut, descending into the dark.
