Chapter 9: The Web Tightens

The rain began to beat a steady, rhythmic tattoo against the floor-to-ceiling windows of Alistair’s downtown office. Inside, the sleek minimalist space was illuminated only by the glow of computer monitors and a single brass desk lamp. Clara sat in an ergonomic leather chair, her fingers resting lightly on her pregnant belly, feeling stronger and more grounded than she had in years. The shock of the betrayal by Melissa Thorne had transitioned into cold, strategic clarity.
The door to the private office swung open quietly, and Marcus Vance—Julian’s estranged older brother—stepped into the room. Marcus looked remarkably like Julian in facial structure, but wore an expression of profound exhaustion and remorse rather than arrogant ambition. He was dressed in a simple dark sweater, carrying a worn leather briefcase.
Alistair stood up from his desk and gestured toward the seating area. "Thank you for coming, Marcus. I trust your transit here was undisturbed."
Marcus nodded slowly, casting a hesitant glance toward Clara before taking a seat across from her. "Thank you for meeting with me, Clara. And... I am profoundly sorry for what my brother did to you. What he has been doing for years."
Clara studied Marcus carefully. Unlike Julian, Marcus had chosen to distance himself from the family years ago, refusing to participate in their social climbing schemes. "You were the one who sent the documents to Victoria, weren't you?" Clara asked quietly.
Marcus looked down at his hands, folding them together. "I was. Julian reached out to me last week, boasting about how he had outsmarted the Sterling family, how he was going to take half your fortune and leave you with nothing once the baby was born. He even bragged about Melissa helping him set up the offshore accounts. I couldn't watch him destroy an innocent woman and an unborn child just to feed his pathetic ego anymore. We share blood, Clara, but we don't share a soul."
Alistair leaned forward, resting his forearms on the desk. "Your cooperation changes the legal landscape entirely, Marcus. The offshore accounts can be frozen immediately under international banking treaties, and Melissa Thorne’s involvement elevates this from a simple domestic fraud case to a multi-jurisdictional conspiracy."
"She’s the mastermind behind the financial structuring," Marcus added grimly, opening his briefcase and pulling out an original hard drive. "Julian doesn't have the brains for offshore asset laundering. Melissa set the whole thing up. She promised him a new life in Europe once the divorce papers were finalized."
Victoria, who had been listening quietly from the corner of the room, shook her head in sheer disbelief. "I always knew Melissa was ambitious, but to conspire to ruin her own friend... it's pure sociopathy."

"Greed makes monsters out of ordinary people," Clara said softly, her voice steady and resolute. She looked directly at Marcus, offering a small nod of appreciation. "Thank you for doing the right thing, Marcus. It takes a lot of courage to turn against your own blood."
"It’s not courage, Clara. It’s basic decency," Marcus replied quietly. "Julian deserves every consequence coming his way."
