Chapter 5: Unraveling the Web

The afternoon sun cast long, golden shadows across the mahogany desk in Alistair’s downtown office. The penthouse suite on the fifty-fifth floor offered a panoramic view of New York, but inside, the atmosphere was strictly business. Clara, resting comfortably on a plush velvet sofa with a cashmere blanket draped over her legs, watched as her brother reviewed a thick folder of financial documents. Victoria sat nearby, reviewing a list of Julian’s associates and creditors that Alistair’s private investigators had managed to pull together in record time.

"It gets worse," Alistair muttered, turning a page covered in bank transfer records. He looked up, his gaze softening slightly when he looked at Clara. "Julian didn't just drain your personal account. Two weeks ago, he took out a high-interest bridge loan using your name as a guarantor without your knowledge or consent. He forged your signature on the loan documents."

Clara sat up slightly, clutching the blanket to her chest. "Forged my signature? How is that even possible? I never signed any loan paperwork."

"He used the documents you signed for the tax restructuring," Victoria explained, pointing to a highlighted section of the report she was holding. "He apparently had multiple copies printed with different headers, knowing you trusted him enough not to read every single page of boilerplate legal jargon. It’s textbook white-collar fraud."

"He thought he was untouchable because he married a Sterling," Alistair added coldly, tossing the folder onto the desk. "He assumed that even if things fell apart, our family’s reputation for privacy would force us to settle quietly, pay off his debts, and sweep him under the rug with a generous severance check to keep him away from the press."

Clara looked down at her hands, feeling a profound wave of embarrassment wash over her. "I was so blind. I wanted to believe in the man I thought he was when we met. I pushed all of you away because I thought you were just being overprotective snobs who couldn't accept an ordinary man into the family."

"You were in love, Clara, and love makes people vulnerable," Victoria said softly, moving across the room to sit beside her friend on the sofa, squeezing her hand reassuringly. "Never blame yourself for someone else's calculated deception. Julian was wearing a very convincing mask."

"Well, the mask is off permanently," Alistair said firmly, reaching for his desk phone. "I’ve authorized our legal team to file immediate criminal charges for domestic violence, forgery, and financial fraud. Furthermore, we’ve frozen all remaining joint accounts and revoked his corporate credit cards. By the time he wakes up tomorrow morning, he won't even be able to buy a cup of coffee with stolen money."

As Alistair began dialing, the sharp buzz of the office intercom interrupted him. His executive assistant’s voice came through the speaker, tight and urgent.

"Mr. Sterling, you have a visitor in the lobby. A Mr. Julian Vance. He’s demanding to see his wife, and security is having trouble holding him back."
