Chapter 6: The Lobby Confrontation

The lobby of Sterling Tower was a cathedral of polished granite, cascading water features, and modern art installations, usually humming with the quiet, dignified murmurs of high-powered executives. Today, however, that dignified silence was shattered by the frantic shouting of a desperate man. Julian Vance stood near the security turnstiles, his white shirt now wrinkled and stained at the cuff, his hair disheveled from running his hands through it in panic. Two burly security guards blocked his path, their posture rigid and unyielding.

"Let me through!" Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the high marble ceilings. "I am family! My wife is up there! You have no legal right to keep me from my home and my family!"

Passersby whispered and pointed, pulling out their phones to record the spectacle. Julian didn't care about the humiliation anymore; reality had finally crashed down on him. Earlier that morning, when he tried to buy breakfast, his credit cards had been declined with a generic bank error. Moments later, his landlord had called to inform him that his lease on the downtown penthouse had been terminated by corporate mandate, and his personal accounts showed a balance of exactly zero dollars. The Sterling family hadn't just kicked him out; they had systematically dismantled his entire existence in less than three hours.

From the private elevator bank across the lobby, the glass doors slid open silently. Alistair stepped out first, his tall frame cutting an imposing figure in his black suit, flanked by his two personal bodyguards. Clara stepped out behind him, walking with deliberate calm, her white pleated dress swaying slightly with each step, her hand resting firmly on her pregnant belly. Victoria followed closely, her expression cool and indifferent.

Julian spotted them immediately and lunged forward, though the security guards easily intercepted him, holding him back by his shoulders.

"Clara! Thank God!" Julian pleaded, his voice dropping into a desperate, pleading tone that sounded entirely hollow. "Baby, please, listen to me. This is all a misunderstanding! Your family—they’re crazy, they’re twisting everything! We can talk about this, just come home with me."

Clara stopped a few paces away, looking at the man she had loved for three years with a detached clarity that chilled him to the bone. There was no anger left in her eyes, only a profound, hollow disappointment.

"Home?" Clara echoed quietly, her voice carrying easily in the cavernous lobby. "You don't have a home, Julian. And you certainly don't have a wife."

Julian’s desperate expression flickered, replaced for a brief second by a flash of genuine malice before he forced the tearful facade back onto his face. "You’re letting them brainwash you! They’ve always hated me because I wasn't born into a billionaire dynasty! They want to ruin us!"

"You ruined yourself the moment you raised your hand against me," Clara said steadily, her voice unwavering. "And you sealed your fate when you forged my signature to steal money from my unborn child."

Julian’s face went completely pale. The panic in his eyes was no longer an act. "What... what are you talking about?"

"The bank loans, Julian. The forged documents. The embezzlement," Alistair stepped forward, his voice a lethal whisper that only Julian could hear. "The police are currently executing a search warrant at your office and your temporary hotel room. By sunset, you’ll be sitting in a holding cell, wondering how you could be so arrogant as to steal from the Sterlings."
