Chapter 8: The Secret Ally

Across town, far away from the depressing confines of the police precinct, the penthouse apartment of Victoria Hayes was bathed in the warm, amber glow of late afternoon. Clara sat on a plush velvet chaise lounge, sipping a cup of chamomile tea while Alistair reviewed a fresh batch of legal documents on his tablet. Victoria walked in from the foyer, holding a manila envelope that had just been delivered by a private courier.
"You’re not going to believe this," Victoria said, her brow furrowed in deep concern as she handed the envelope to Alistair. "The courier said this was dropped off at my apartment building by someone who refused to leave their name, but insisted it was meant for Clara."
Alistair took the envelope, sliding out a stack of printed chat transcripts and photocopies of signed financial contracts. He scanned the first page, and his expression instantly hardened into a mask of pure fury. He looked up at Clara, hesitation flickering across his features for the first time since the ordeal began.
"What is it, Alistair?" Clara asked, setting her teacup down on the glass side table with a slight rattle. "Is it something else Julian did?"
"It’s not just Julian," Alistair replied grimly, handing the papers over to her. "It looks like your husband had a very active social life outside of his business ventures."
Clara took the papers with a trembling hand. As she read through the printed text messages and bank statements, her breath hitched in her throat. The messages were between Julian and a woman named Melissa Thorne—a high-profile corporate publicist who happened to be a close acquaintance of Victoria’s. The conversation detailed a coordinated plan to systematically isolate Clara from her friends, manipulate her into signing away her voting rights in the family foundation, and eventually divorce her after the baby was born to claim a massive alimony settlement under New York law.
Victoria gasped, covering her mouth as she read over Clara’s shoulder. "Melissa? My God, I’ve known her for five years! She was at our charity gala last month! She acted like she adored you, Clara!"
Clara stared at the pages, the emotional pain cutting far deeper than the physical blow Julian had delivered in the hallway. It wasn't just a marriage built on lies; it was an elaborate conspiracy orchestrated by people she had trusted. The realization that someone in her own social circle had actively plotted against her and her unborn child made her stomach turn.
"She’s been helping him filter the stolen money through offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands," Alistair explained, his voice dangerously calm. "Our investigators missed the offshore connection because the shell company was registered under Melissa’s mother’s maiden name. Whoever sent these documents knew exactly what Julian and Melissa were hiding."

"Who would send this?" Clara whispered, looking up at her brother with tear-filled eyes. "Who hates Julian enough to betray him like this?"
Alistair stood up, walking over to the window to gaze out at the darkening sky. A slow, knowing smirk touched the corner of his mouth. "Someone who realized Julian was a sinking ship, and decided to jump before the captain pulled everyone down with him."
