Chapter 3: Leaving the Cage

The departure from Sterling Manor was swift and methodical, orchestrated with the clinical precision of a military extraction. Alistair’s bodyguards escorted Julian toward the service wing, effectively cutting off any further attempts at manipulation or dramatic outbursts. Julian’s angry protests echoed faintly down the corridor before being cut off entirely by the heavy sound of a closing security door. Silence settled once more over the grand hallway, though the air felt significantly lighter, cleansed of a toxic presence that had lingered for far too long.

Clara closed her eyes for a brief moment, letting out a long, ragged breath that she felt she had been holding for years. Her hand remained resting on her pregnant belly, gently stroking the fabric of her white dress as if reassuring her baby that the immediate danger had passed.

Victoria gently rubbed Clara’s back, her golden dress catching the soft morning light filtering through the high arched windows. "You were so brave, Clara. I know how hard that was," Victoria murmured, her voice thick with emotion. "I should have spoken up sooner. I watched him slowly isolate you, and I hate myself for not fighting harder to open your eyes."

"You couldn't have known, Vic," Clara replied softly, opening her eyes and offering a weak, grateful smile to her oldest friend. "He was a master at hiding it behind closed doors. Only when the pregnancy started showing, when I stopped bending to his every demand... that’s when the mask completely slipped."

Alistair turned back toward them, the fierce, predatory look in his eyes instantly melting into deep, protective tenderness as he approached his sister. He knelt slightly so he was at eye level with Clara, gently taking her cold hands in his own warm ones. "The car is waiting outside, Clara. Dr. Evans has already been notified and is waiting at the private clinic to run a full evaluation. We need to make sure you and the baby are completely unharmed after... after what happened."

Clara nodded slowly, feeling the overwhelming relief of being rescued by the family she had tried so hard to prove her independence to. When she married Julian against her family's better judgment, she had stubbornly refused their help, determined to prove she could build a life on her own terms. Julian had used that stubbornness against her, convincing her that her family was controlling, that she only had him.

"Thank you, Alistair," Clara whispered, a tear finally escaping and tracking down her cheek. "I was so foolish. You were right about him from the very beginning."

"We don't need to talk about right or wrong right now," Alistair said gently, standing up and offering his arm to her. "We only need to talk about moving forward. Your safety and the baby’s health are the only priorities that matter."

Victoria gathered Clara’s light jacket and handbag from the mahogany console table, slipping the strap over her shoulder. Together, the three of them walked down the grand hallway, bypassing the discarded wedding ring on the floor—a symbol of a binding contract now broken beyond repair. As they stepped out through the front entrance into the crisp autumn air, a sleek black sedan waited with its engine idling quietly. The heavy oak doors of the mansion closed behind them, shutting the past away and opening a new chapter defined by protection, truth, and the unwavering strength of family bonds.
