Chapter 4: Scars and Broken Slings

Ten minutes later, Marcus sat inside his private executive suite on the seventy-fourth floor. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass, Manhattan glittered in late afternoon gold.

On the white Italian leather couch, Toby sat curled up, his small face pale from fatigue. Leo stood defensively in front of his little brother, eyeing the room’s crystal decanters and modern art like traps in an enemy compound.

Marcus loosened his tie and set a tray of sandwiches and fresh fruit on the glass table. "You two must be starving. Eat."

Toby looked at Leo for permission. Leo nodded once, and the six-year-old eagerly reached for a turkey sandwich with his left hand, wincing slightly as his injured shoulder shifted.

"How did Toby hurt his arm?" Marcus asked softly.

Leo’s fists clenched. "Our landlord tried to throw our stuff onto the street two weeks ago when the rent ran out. He shoved me down the stairs. Toby jumped between us and caught the railing. It snapped his collarbone."

Marcus felt a sharp, sickening spike in his chest. *Twelve years.* For twelve years, while he lived in penthouses and dined with presidents, the family of the man who died for him was being evicted by slum-lords and starving in tenement basements.

"Why didn't your mother reach out sooner?" Marcus asked, his voice cracking. "I set up a corporate survivor fund. Every family from Sector 4 was supposed to receive a monthly annuity."

Leo’s eyes flashed with fierce, adult bitterness. "What fund? Mom applied four times. Every letter came back stamped *'Denied: Incident Ruled Operator Negligence.'* They blamed Dad for the fire, Mr. Vance. They said he caused the explosion."

Marcus froze. The air left his lungs.

"Who told her that?"

Leo reached into his backpack and pulled out a faded legal document with a corporate seal. Marcus glanced at the bottom of the rejection letter.
