Chapter 11: The Live Broadcast

The main auditorium was blinding with flashes and television spotlights. Over five hundred journalists crowded the floor, their chatter a deafening roar. Rumors of a corporate coup and market chaos had sent Wall Street into a frenzy.

When Marcus Vance stepped up to the microphone, the room went dead silent.

He didn't stand alone.

Holding his right hand was Leo, standing tall and proud. Holding his left hand was little Toby, whose broken arm had been newly set and bandaged in a fresh medical cast provided by the city's finest pediatric surgeons.

Marcus adjusted the microphone. He looked straight into the camera lens that broadcast his face to over one hundred million people worldwide.

"Twelve years ago," Marcus began, his voice steady, deep, and carrying across the globe, "a fire broke out in Pittsburgh that should have ended my life. I walked out of that inferno because a man named Arthur Campbell chose to sacrifice his tomorrow so that I could have mine."

The press pool froze, cameras zooming in on the worn, burnt journal resting on the lectern.

"For over a decade, Vance Dynamics grew rich on a foundation of deception. Our legal department, under the direct orders of Victoria Sterling, falsified safety reports and framed Arthur Campbell for the disaster to evade liability and inflate corporate stock value."

Pandemonium erupted among the journalists, shouting questions over one another.

Marcus raised his hand, commanding silence.

"I am here today not to celebrate a merger, but to confess a corporate crime. I have handed all evidence to the Department of Justice. Victoria Sterling has just been detained by federal agents in the executive suites."

Marcus looked down at the two boys beside him.

"And today, I step down from all executive duties. I am transferring eighty percent of my personal shares into the Arthur Campbell Memorial Trust—dedicated to supporting fallen industrial workers, their widows, and their children across this country."
