Chapter 8

By the following Tuesday afternoon, after school let out, Leo found himself standing in the spacious, sunlit driveway behind Chloe’s suburban home. The contrast between this neighborhood and his own cramped duplex was stark, but the tension he initially expected to feel was entirely absent. Chloe had already rolled up the sleeves of her school uniform shirt, having discarded her grey sweater vest inside the house, and was currently attempting to haul a heavy metal toolbox across the asphalt.
"Here, let me take that," Leo said, stepping forward and easily lifting the toolbox by its handle.
"Thanks," she breathed, wiping a stray strand of blonde hair from her forehead with the back of her wrist. "My dad tried to start working on this two years ago, but he got stuck on the wiring harness and just gave up. It's been sitting here ever since."
She stepped aside, gesturing toward the tarp-covered vehicle parked under a large oak tree. Leo grabbed the edge of the blue tarp and pulled it back with a sharp sweep, revealing the faded red body of a classic 1968 Ford Mustang. Despite the layer of dust and pine needles coating the hood, the car's classic lines were undeniably magnificent.
"She's a beauty," Leo murmured, running his hand appreciatively along the rusted front fender.
"Right?" Chloe said, her face beaming with excitement. "My grandfather bought it brand new when he came back from overseas. He taught me how to identify different wrench sizes when I was eight years old. But engines... engines intimidate me. That's where you come in."
"An engine is just a puzzle, Chloe," Leo said, setting the toolbox down with a metallic clatter and popping the rusty hood latch. The heavy hood creaked upward, releasing the trapped scent of old oil, aged rubber, and decades of dormant history. "You just have to break it down into pieces and figure out which piece isn't talking to the others."

As they leaned over the engine bay together, the awkwardness of their brief school acquaintance completely evaporated. Leo found himself slipping naturally into teacher mode, explaining the function of the alternator, the distributor cap, and the starter solenoid with a quiet confidence that surprised even himself. Chloe listened intently, nodding, asking sharp questions, and handing him the correct tools from the box before he even had to ask.
For the first time in years, Leo wasn't thinking about utility bills, lunch debt receipts, or the crushing weight of his family's financial instability. He was simply two teenagers working side by side under an autumn sun, connected by grease, metal, and a shared willingness to look past the superficial armor of high school life.
