Chapter 13

Two weeks later, the restoration of the Mustang reached its final stages. The interior upholstery had been scrubbed and conditioned, the dashboard cleaned to a mirror shine, and the exterior waxed until it reflected the afternoon sky like a polished ruby.

On a crisp Friday evening after school, Leo and Chloe stood together in the driveway, admiring their finished masterpiece. The engine purred with a smooth, rhythmic hum that was music to their ears.

"We actually did it," Chloe said softly, leaning against the fender and looking over at Leo with an expression of profound warmth.

"We did," Leo agreed, wiping a final smudge of wax from the side mirror. He turned to face her, realizing how much had changed since that initial, terrifying moment by the cafeteria counter. "You know, Chloe, I never properly thanked you. For the receipt. For stepping in when I was completely drowning."

Chloe shook her head gently, her blonde hair catching the fading golden hour light. "You don't need to thank me, Leo. You paid me back every single day out here in this driveway. You taught me how to fix an engine, sure... but more than that, you showed me what resilience actually looks like."

Leo felt a deep, warm swell of emotion in his chest. He looked into her eyes, seeing all the unspoken understanding, trust, and shared history that had grown between them over the past two months.

"My mom wants to invite you and your parents over for dinner this weekend," Leo said, a slight nervous smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Nothing fancy. Just homemade lasagna in our cramped duplex. But she really wants to thank you properly."

"I would love that," Chloe replied instantly, her smile radiant and completely sincere.
