Chapter 10

Saturday arrived with a sharp drop in temperature, signaling that winter was right around the corner. The auto body shop where Leo worked was closed for the weekend, but Chloe’s driveway served as their makeshift garage. Armed with a portable heater, a floodlight, and a thermos of hot coffee, they dove back into the tangled wiring harness of the '68 Mustang.

Leo lay flat on his back on a piece of cardboard underneath the chassis, working a wrench into the tight space around the starter motor, while Chloe knelt beside the front tire, holding the flashlight steady.

"You got it?" she asked, her breath pluming in the crisp air.

"Almost," Leo strained, his muscles trembling as he applied leverage to a rusted bolt that had refused to budge for forty years. "This bolt was welded by someone who never expected anyone to ever fix it again. Hold the light steady right there... perfect."

With a sudden, metallic crack, the bolt finally gave way. Leo scrambled out from under the car, coughing slightly from the dust, holding up the rusted fastener in triumph. "Got it! That's the last mechanical obstacle between us and turning the ignition."

Chloe cheered, clapping her hands together, completely unconcerned about the grease smudging her face and jacket. "That's incredible! Does this mean we can actually try to start her today?"

"Only one way to find out," Leo said, his heart hammering with a mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation.

They spent the next hour reconnecting the battery, topping off the fluids, and double-checking every single connection they had labored over for the past two weeks. The air grew still as Leo climbed into the cracked vinyl driver's seat. The dashboard was coated in a fine layer of dust, and the steering wheel felt thin and fragile beneath his hands. He looked out through the scratched windshield at Chloe, who stood by the open hood, her hands clasped tightly together in quiet suspense.

Leo inserted the old metal key into the ignition cylinder. It turned with a smooth, satisfying mechanical click. He pushed the clutch down to the floor, took a deep, steadying breath, and turned the key all the way forward.

For two agonizing seconds, nothing happened. Just a dull clicking sound that threatened to crush their hopes.

Then, deep within the rusted iron heart of the machine, something caught. The starter motor whined, a rich cloud of exhaust puffed out from the tailpipe, and suddenly, the entire vehicle roared to life with a deep, throaty rumble that shook the asphalt beneath their feet.

Chloe threw her hands up in the air, shouting with pure joy, while Leo gripped the steering wheel, a massive, uncontainable smile breaking across his face.
