Chapter 3

The remainder of the school day passed in a blur of abstract lectures and ticking clocks. Leo found it impossible to focus on historical dates or mathematical formulas; his mind remained anchored to that single moment by the cafeteria counter. During history class, he caught himself staring out the window at the sprawling athletic fields, wondering if the warm sun could melt the chill that had settled deep into his bones.
When the final dismissal bell echoed through the halls, Leo shouldered his backpack and headed toward his locker. As he spun the combination lock, a familiar voice broke through the ambient noise of slamming metal doors.
"Hey, Leo."
He turned to see Marcus leaning against the lockers two rows down. Marcus shoved his hands into the pockets of his jacket, looking slightly uncomfortable, as if he were carrying a secret that was burning a hole in his lining.
"Hey," Leo replied cautiously, closing his locker door with a muted thud.
Marcus walked over, his sneakers squeaking slightly on the polished floor. "Look, man, I didn't mean to intrude back there during lunch. It's just... I saw what was happening."
"You knew about the receipt?" Leo asked, his voice dropping to a low, defensive register. Pride flared briefly in his chest, a reflexive defense mechanism against pity.
"I didn't know the exact details," Marcus clarified quickly, holding up a hand in a placating gesture. "Not the numbers, anyway. But I knew things have been tight for you. Everybody knows the school's been cracking down on lunch accounts. I just... I saw Chloe talking to the front office yesterday afternoon. She was asking about the hardship fund procedure."
Leo frowned, processing the new information. "Chloe? Why would she be asking about my account?"
May you like
"I don't think she singled you out specifically at first," Marcus admitted, looking down at his shoes. "She just asked how anonymous donations worked for students in the red. But I happened to overhear her mentioning your student ID number when she handed the clerk her card. She knew whose account she was clearing."
The revelation hung heavily in the air between them. It wasn't a random act of generalized charity; it was a deliberate, targeted intervention. Chloe had taken the time to find out who he was, what he owed, and how to fix it without making a public spectacle that would crush his dignity. The depth of that consideration stunned Leo. It wasn't just about money; it was about radical, empathetic awareness in a world that usually preferred to look away from uncomfortable truths.
