Chapter 14

Saturday evening arrived with the comforting scent of baked pasta and garlic drifting through the cramped, warm kitchen of Leo’s duplex. Elena had worked miracles with the small grocery budget, setting the wooden table with their nicest mismatched plates and a single flickering candle in the center.
When a knock sounded at the front door, Leo wiped his hands on a dish towel and opened it to reveal Chloe and her parents standing on the porch. Mr. Harrison was holding a bottle of sparkling cider, while Mrs. Harrison carried a homemade apple pie.
"Come on in," Leo said, stepping aside with a genuine, welcoming smile.
The dinner was a resounding success. There was no awkwardness, no stiffness born of different social backgrounds. Instead, the two families shared stories, laughed over burnt garlic bread, and celebrated the resilience that had brought them all together. Elena looked across the table at her son, seeing the confident, grounded young man he had blossomed into, and her eyes welled with silent tears of joy.
Later that evening, as Chloe and Leo stood on the front porch saying goodbye under the soft glow of the porch light, the reality of their journey settled completely into place.
"Tomorrow, we're taking the Mustang out for its first real test drive down by the lake," Chloe said, looking up at him with anticipation.

"I'll bring the tools just in case," Leo joked, though his voice was soft and full of affection.
"You won't need them," she replied quietly. "We built it right."
