Chapter 6 - The Escape Through the Rain

The cold night air hit Elena like a physical blow as she scrambled through the open window of the archive room, following Detective Vance onto a rusted metal fire escape. A sudden downpour had started, turning the alleyway below into a slick maze of shining asphalt and deep puddles.
“Watch your step, keep your weight low!” Vance urged, his voice barely audible over the roar of the rain hitting the corrugated tin roof above them.
Elena’s white sneakers slipped on the wet metal grating, and she let out a sharp gasp as her knee slammed hard against a railing. Pain flared up her leg, but adrenaline kept her moving. She clutched her black handbag to her chest, making sure the brass safety deposit box key was secure inside.
Behind them, the frosted glass door of the archive room shattered with a loud, violent crash. A beam of a high-powered flashlight cut through the driving rain, sweeping across the brick wall just inches above their heads.
“They’re on the fire escape!” a harsh, gravelly voice shouted from the window.
“Move, Elena! Run!” Vance yelled, grabbing her arm and practically pulling her down the final, wobbling section of the metal stairs that led straight into the dark, narrow alleyway.
They hit the pavement running, splashing through deep puddles as the sound of pursuit echoed behind them. Vance pulled Elena into the shadow of a large industrial dumpster just as a black SUV crept slowly past the mouth of the alley, its headlights cutting jagged beams through the sheet of rain.
Elena pressed her back against the cold brick wall, trying desperately to control her breathing so the men in the vehicle wouldn't hear her gasping for air. Water streamed through her dark brown hair, plastering her purple knit sweater to her skin, but she didn’t care. Her entire body was shaking, not just from the cold, but from the terrifying realization that her life had become a lethal game of chess.
Vance leaned close to her ear, his trench coat soaked through. “We can’t go back to your house, and we can’t call your father. His phone is tapped. We have to get to that transit station locker tonight.”
Elena looked up at the detective, her eyes burning with a fierce, newfound resolve that replaced her earlier tears. “Why did my mom hide the real deed? If she knew these people were dangerous, why didn't she just go to the police?”
Vance gave her a grim, knowing look. “Because the police department was on Amanda’s payroll years before your mother passed away. The corruption goes all the way to the top.”

Suddenly, the screen of Vance’s burner phone lit up inside his coat pocket with a flashing red alert. He pulled it out, and as the ambient light illuminated his face, Elena saw something that made her blood run cold: a live security feed of her own bedroom, showing a figure in black standing right beside her bed, holding a knife.
