Chapter 13 - The Father’s Confession

The overhead work light hummed softly in the cavernous warehouse, casting long, jittery shadows across the concrete floor. Elena stopped dead in her tracks, her hand gripping the strap of her black handbag so tightly her knuckles turned white.

“What are you talking about, Dad?” Elena asked, her voice trembling as she stared at the man in the charcoal grey suit. The protective father who had descended the modern staircase earlier that morning was gone, replaced by a stranger wearing an expression of profound, crushing defeat.

Sean didn't lower the manila folder. Instead, he let it slide from his fingers, letting it hit the concrete with a dull thud at Elena’s feet.

“I didn't just borrow money from Amanda’s firm, Elena,” Sean said, his voice barely louder than a whisper, carrying an unbearable weight of shame. “I signed over the deeds to every property your mother brought into our marriage years before she got sick. The house, this warehouse, our savings… all of it was already gone.”

Vance stepped up beside Elena, his hand resting reassuringly on her shoulder, though his eyes remained fixed on Sean with guarded suspicion. “And the forgery on the probate documents? You signed those too, Sean?”

Sean nodded slowly, his eyes finally meeting his daughter’s tear-filled gaze. “Amanda promised me that if I played along, if I helped her clear out the remaining trust accounts, she would spare you. She said you would be provided for.”

“By throwing me out of my own home?” Elena cried out, her voice cracking as the betrayal cut deeper than any physical pain. “By watching her shove me toward the front door like a stray dog?”

“I didn't know she was going to do that today,” Sean pleaded, taking a half-step forward. “I swear to you, Elena, I thought you were safe at school.”

Before Elena could respond, the sharp, rhythmic clapping of slow applause echoed from the dark recesses of the warehouse near the towering shipping containers.

Out stepped Amanda, wearing her burgundy blouse and beige trousers, accompanied by Marcus Thorne, who held a heavy iron crowbar resting casually against his shoulder.

“A touching family reunion,” Amanda purred, stepping into the ring of light with a triumphant smirk. “Too bad it has to end so soon.”

Amanda gestured to Thorne, who raised the iron crowbar and brought it down hard against the back of Sean’s skull before anyone could react. Sean collapsed to the concrete floor like a felled tree, motionless.

Elena screamed, dropping to her knees beside her unconscious father as Amanda looked down at them with cold, merciless eyes.

“Now, Elena,” Amanda said smoothly, stepping over Sean’s body. “Hand me the black handbag. Or your father’s final mistake will be his last.”
