Chapter 4 - The Abandoned Office

The address on the slip of paper led Elena far away from the bright, sterile suburbs and deep into the historical financial district of the city. The sun was beginning to dip below the concrete canyons, casting long, bruised shadows across the pavement. She clutched her black handbag tightly, her white sneakers clicking against the old stone sidewalk until she stopped in front of a crumbling, narrow brick building bearing a fading brass plaque: Vane & Associates - Legal Consultants.
The front door was unlocked. Elena pushed it open, the brass bell above the frame chiming with a hollow, lonely sound that echoed up a dark, carpeted stairwell. The air smelled of old paper, dust, and faint, dried lavender—the exact scent of her mother’s favorite perfume.
“Hello?” Elena called out, her voice trembling in the gloom.
No one answered. She carefully navigated the stairs, guided by a dim shaft of amber light pouring through a frosted glass door at the end of the second-floor hallway. The door bore a hand-lettered sign: Client Archives.
She pushed the door open. The room was lined with tall wooden filing cabinets, most of them half-open with folders spilling out onto the floor. At the center of the room stood a heavy oak desk, and sitting on top of it was a vintage cassette recorder, its red LED light blinking rhythmically in the dark.
Elena froze. Someone had been here very recently. The dust on the desk had been disturbed, and a trail of fresh footprints led toward the back window, which was cracked open to let in the evening breeze.
Slowly, almost against her better judgment, Elena walked over to the desk and pressed the play button on the cassette recorder. The tape hissed with static for a moment before a voice filled the quiet room—a voice that made Elena’s knees buckle. It was her mother, speaking in a hurried, panicked whisper.
“If you are hearing this tape, Sean didn't protect us. He sold us out to Amanda’s syndicate. And if you found the key in your bag, Elena, you need to run right now because they are already behind you.”
May you like
A floorboard creaked loudly behind the door just as a heavy hand clamped over Elena’s mouth.
