Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Deception

The white-marbled hallway echoed with the sharp sting of Amanda’s voice. Elena clutched her black handbag tighter against her chest, the leather strap biting into her palm as if it were the only solid anchor left in a world that had suddenly dissolved into chaos.

“Your mother is gone. Now this is my house!” Amanda yelled, her burgundy blouse catching the bright morning light as she closed the distance between them.

Elena’s long dark brown hair fell in tangled strands across her face, damp with tears. She took another shaky step backward toward the open front door, her white sneakers squeaking against the pristine floor.

“Let go of me! Get out!” Elena screamed desperately, her voice cracking under the weight of an unbearable betrayal.

Amanda’s fingers tightened like a vice around the sleeve of Elena’s purple knit sweater, shoving her roughly toward the threshold. Elena’s face was a mask of raw anguish, her eyes wide with disbelief as she looked past Amanda into the sunlit street where her mother’s garden used to bloom.

Footsteps echoed from the deep recesses of the foyer. Sean, tall and imposing in his charcoal grey three-piece suit, descended the modern wooden staircase with a look of thunderous authority.

“Amanda! What are you doing to my daughter?” Sean demanded, his voice ringing through the open-plan architecture like a dropped gavel.

Amanda spun around, her face instantly dropping its venomous mask to assume a look of startled, trembling innocence.

“Sean… she was leaving,” Amanda stammered nervously, her hands fluttering toward her beige trousers.

Sean ignored her, his eyes locked on Elena, who was gasping for air. But before Sean could take another step toward his daughter, his phone buzzed violently in his breast pocket. He pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and his face drained of all color, his expression turning from protective anger to sheer terror as he whispered a name that froze the air in the room.
