Chapter 5 - The Shadow in the Archives

The breath left Elena’s lungs in a sudden, panicked rush. The hand clamped over her mouth was large and calloused, smelling faintly of expensive cologne and cold winter air. She thrashed wildly, driving the heel of her white sneakers backward into her attacker’s shin.

A sharp curse echoed in the cramped archive room. The grip loosened just enough for Elena to wrench herself free, spinning around with her fists raised.

Standing in the amber glow of the desk lamp was not a hired hitman or a faceless criminal. It was Detective Vance, a man who had dined at their family table dozens of times, wearing a rumpled trench coat over a sharp suit.

“Elena, stop! It’s me! Lower your voice!” Vance hissed, holding up his hands in a defensive gesture while wincing from the kick to his shin.

Elena backed away until her spine hit the heavy oak desk, her chest heaving as she clutched her black handbag like a weapon. “What are you doing here? You were my parents’ friend! You helped at my mom’s funeral!”

“I’m here because I’m trying to keep you alive,” Vance whispered urgently, stepping closer but keeping his palms visible. “Your mother trusted me with this archive. And she trusted me to keep you safe from what your father has gotten himself mixed up in.”

“My dad?” Elena’s voice broke. “The tape just said my dad sold us out!”

“Your father is being blackmailed, Elena,” Vance said grimly. “Amanda isn't just some gold-digger he met at a country club. She’s the legal front for a high-level asset recovery firm that seizes properties through forged probate documents. They took your mother’s life, and now they want this house—and everything your mother hid.”

Vance pointed toward the cassette recorder, which was still spinning silently. “That key in your handbag? It opens a secure locker at the central transit station. Inside is the original deed to your house, unencumbered by Amanda’s fake trusts.”

Elena stared at the detective, her mind reeling. Could she trust him? Or was he just another player in this dangerous game?

Before Vance could say another word, the heavy crash of the front downstairs door echoing up the stairwell shattered the silence. Heavy, purposeful footsteps began marching up the wooden steps, accompanied by the distinct, unmistakable click of a safety being clicked off on a firearm.

Vance’s face drained of color as he grabbed Elena’s wrist. “They found us. Out the back window, now!”
