Chapter 7 - The Maintenance Shaft

Black smoke billowed from the breached access hatch, carrying the sharp, chemical stench of burning insulation. Evan coughed violently, stumbling backward as soot settled over his dark grey hoodie.
“Get down!” Miller shouted, grabbing Evan by the collar and shoving him behind the heavy oak teacher's desk. Mrs. Gable dropped to her knees beside them, her hands trembling as she clutched her leather handbag to her chest like a shield.
From inside the gaping hole in the floor, the sound of heavy machinery grinding to a halt was replaced by a rhythmic, clicking hiss—the sound of pressurized gas valves opening.
“The purge cycle,” Miller muttered, his face grim. He pulled a heavy canvas handkerchief from his pocket, spat on it from his water bottle, and handed it to Evan. “Press this against your nose and mouth. Breathe through the cloth.”
“What is happening to my school?” Mrs. Gable wept softly, her strict facade completely dissolved into helpless terror. “I’ve taught history in this building for twenty-two years. I knew every student who walked through those doors.”
“You knew the versions they allowed you to see,” Miller corrected her sharply, though his tone softened slightly as he looked at her pale face. “This facility isn't a school, lady. It’s a human testing facility disguised as a public institution. The students are subjects; the teachers are unwitting wardens.”
Evan gripped the damp handkerchief tightly against his face, his eyes stinging from the drifting smoke. Through the haze, he watched the security camera in the ceiling vent. The red glowing dot had turned into a steady, pulsing blue light, as if downloading the data of their exact emotional reactions in real time.
“We can't stay here,” Evan said around the cloth. “The gas is spreading.”
A pale yellow mist was beginning to seep upward from the floor tracks, clinging to the linoleum and hissing softly as it touched the spilled coffee. Wherever the mist pooled, the tiles bubbled and dissolved into a thick, sticky sludge.
Miller grabbed the heavy metal clipboard he had dropped earlier, using it to swipe away the sludge near the doorway. “The maintenance shaft leads to the old boiler room beneath the gymnasium. If we can reach the main steam lines, we can trigger a manual fire alarm that the automated system can't override.”
He didn't wait for agreement. He dropped legs-first into the dark, smoky opening of the floor trench, extending a thick hand up to help Evan down.
Evan took his hand, sliding over the edge of the broken panel. But as his feet touched the metal tracks below, a cold, synthetic voice echoed from the overhead vents, broadcasting directly into the trench.
