Chapter 12 - The Sudden Silence

The deafening hum of the server fans died away in an instant, plunging the underground vault into an eerie, suffocating silence. The glowing red vault door clicked unlocked, its heavy bolts sliding back with a soft pneumatic hiss.
Director Vance froze underneath Miller, his struggle instantly ending as the weapon in his hands went dead, its electronic targeting scope flickering out. He slowly let his head fall back against the concrete floor, a bitter, humorless smile touching his lips.
“You think... you stopped it?” Vance breathed, his voice raspy in the sudden quiet. “The data was... already mirrored to the cloud facility in Chicago... twenty minutes ago.”
Miller pressed his forearm harder against Vance’s chest, pinning him securely. “You’re done, Vance. The whole house of cards is coming down.”
Evan let go of the yellow safety lever, his arms shaking from the exertion. He walked slowly back toward the central console where Maya was staring blankly at the tablet screen. The progress bar had frozen at ninety-nine percent, but the sync status read: CONNECTION TERMINATED. REMOTE SERVERS OFFLINE.
“Is it... is it over?” Mrs. Gable asked, rising slowly from behind the cooling unit, her clothes covered in dust and her hair completely undone. She looked exhausted, but her eyes held a fierce, unbroken dignity.
“For this facility, yes,” Maya said, exhaling a long, shuddering breath. She looked up at Evan, a genuine, tired smile breaking through the soot on her face. “You actually did it. You cut the local nervous system.”
Suddenly, the heavy vault door at the front of the server room swung completely open, flooding the dark bunker with bright, natural daylight. Footsteps echoed from the corridor outside—not the heavy, mechanical march of automated guards, but the shouts of real people, calling out names and flashing standard police department badges.
“State police! Stay where you are, hands where we can see them!” a voice boomed from the doorway.
Two uniformed officers rushed into the room, their weapons drawn, followed instantly by a tall man in a plain grey trench coat who stopped dead in his tracks as he saw Evan standing among the server racks.
Evan dropped his arms, staring across the room at the newcomer. The man in the trench coat dropped his flashlight, his face going pale as he recognized his son.
“Evan?” the man whispered, his voice cracking with disbelief.
May you like
“Dad?” Evan breathed, taking a slow step forward as the heavy burden of the past three years finally began to lift from his shoulders.
