Chapter 1 - The First Track

“Stop making up stories, Evan! Desks do not move by themselves!” Mrs. Gable shouted, her face flushing with harsh irritation as she slammed her palms onto her wooden podium.

Evan clutched the edges of his dark grey hoodie, his knuckles turning pale against the rough fabric.

“I didn't make it up, Mrs. Gable! I swear the desk just slid sideways three inches while I was writing my history essay!” Evan replied, his voice trembling slightly under the weight of her intense, unyielding gaze.

“You have a wild imagination and a severe lack of focus, young man. Sit down and stop disrupting the entire class with your impossible claims!” she snapped back, leaning aggressively over the desk.

Before Evan could defend himself further, the heavy classroom door creaked open. A large, muscular man in a brown winter jacket and a worn baseball cap stepped inside, carrying a thick metal clipboard with official paperwork. He dropped it onto the floor with a loud clatter as he scanned the room, his eyes narrowing at the floorboards near Evan’s desk.

“He’s not lying. There’s a mechanized track system under here,” the security officer stated, kneeling down and prying up a rotted wooden panel.

Mrs. Gable gasped, her grip slipping instantly. The ceramic coffee cup she held plummeted downward, shattering violently against the linoleum and splashing dark liquid across her maroon blouse.

Without missing a beat, the security officer stood tall next to the boy, pulling a heavy-duty radio from his belt.

“Lock down this building right now. Someone has a live feed of these kids,” he said urgently into the walkie-talkie.

The tinny voice on the other end crackled with static, confirming the protocol before going dead silent. Evan looked down at the open gap in the floor, watching tiny metallic gears slowly grind to a halt in the darkness below. Mrs. Gable stared at the spilled coffee, her strict composure completely cracking as she realized her entire classroom had been wired without her knowledge. But as the distant sirens began to wail outside, a tiny red glowing dot flickered on the inside rim of the security officer's walkie-talkie lens.
