Chapter 3 - The Sterile Corridor

“Perimeter is compromised, command,” Miller spoke into the radio, his voice carefully measured. “We found the routing node in Room 204. Requesting immediate extraction for the student.”
“Negative, Officer Miller,” the digitized voice replied instantly. “Keep the student in the room. Maintenance teams are en route to seal the floor panel. Do not interfere with the curriculum.”
Mrs. Gable stepped forward, her face pale. “Curriculum? This is a hardware infiltration! I demand to speak with the superintendent right now!”
“There is no superintendent on site today, Mrs. Gable,” Evan said softly. He pulled a small, crumpled piece of paper from his pocket—a homework assignment he had dropped earlier. On the back, faint carbon smudges showed an architectural layout of the school, but with rooms marked that didn't exist on any official school map. “My dad worked on the district IT grid before he... before he left. He told me the school board outsourced the building's infrastructure management to a private defense contractor three years ago.”
Miller looked down at the paper in Evan’s hand, his expression darkening. He snatched the paper, folded it quickly, and shoved it into his winter jacket pocket.
“Kid, you know a lot more than a normal eighth grader should,” Miller said, stepping toward the door and peering through the narrow glass window.
The hallway outside was completely deserted, but the lockers lining the walls were slowly clicking open one by one, moving in a synchronized, mechanical wave from left to right. Clack. Clack. Clack. The sound was deafening in the silence of the lockdown.
“We can't stay here,” Mrs. Gable said, her strict demeanor returning out of sheer panic. She grabbed her leather handbag from the podium. “We are walking down to the administrative office right now, whether command likes it or not.”

She reached for the brass doorknob, turning it with a firm twist. But the door refused to budge. The deadbolt had slid into place on the outside, and a harsh, electronic buzzing sound indicated the biometric scanner had activated. On the small glass pad next to the frame, a glowing green light flashed once, then shifted to a solid, unyielding crimson.
