Chapter 6 - The Violet Fog

The sweet, metallic scent of ozone rolled into the classroom, stinging Evan’s eyes and causing Mrs. Gable to cough sharply into her sleeve. The hallway outside looked entirely different than it had ten minutes ago; the lockers had retracted seamlessly into the walls, leaving smooth, seamless white panels that stretched endlessly in both directions without a single door or exit sign in sight.

“Don't step out there,” Miller commanded, blocking the doorway with his broad frame. He unclipped a heavy steel keyring from his belt and wedged one of the keys into the automatic door closer, jamming the mechanism so it couldn't slam shut behind them.

“Where did the lockers go?” Mrs. Gable breathed, her voice trembling as she swept her small keychain light across the corridor. “This isn't the south wing. We’re on the second floor of the West Building. The stairwell should be ten feet to the left!”

“It was ten feet to the left,” Miller corrected her, his eyes scanning the ceiling where security cameras were now tracking their movements with audible, mechanical clicks. “The entire corridor has been reconfigured on a hydraulic gantry system. They can rearrange the floor plan in under three minutes while the building is in lockdown.”

Evan stepped up beside Miller, peering into the violet haze. In the distance, a muffled chime rang out—the exact same chime that played at the beginning of every standardized test.

“They want us to move,” Evan said, his voice disturbingly calm compared to the sheer terror gripping his teacher. “The system is designed to herd us. If we stay in the room, they pump in the gas. If we go out into the hall, we follow their path.”

“We’re not playing their game,” Miller said grimly. He reached into his coat and pulled out a heavy black utility knife, snapping open a thick, serrated blade. He slashed viciously at the drywall beside the door frame. Instead of gypsum and wooden studs, the knife struck solid sheet titanium with a shower of bright white sparks.

Mrs. Gable covered her mouth, her eyes wide with horror. “A high school... built over a bunker. Why would anyone do this?”

“Compliance isn't taught in books, Mrs. Gable. It’s engineered,” Miller said, turning back to face them. “Now, we move fast. We take the maintenance shaft under your desk before the purge cycle starts.”

He reached down to grab the edge of the floor panel, but before his fingers could catch the metal lip, a deafening explosion echoed from deep within the sub-floor tracks, blowing the access hatch off its hinges and sending a thick plume of black smoke billowing straight up into Evan’s face.
