Chapter 7: The Burden Shared

The iron bar refused to budge. The water level was rising rapidly, now reaching Eleanor’s chin. Her strength was failing; her lungs burned from the cold and the exhaustion.

Above her, a sharp *CRACK* echoed through the concrete ceiling as a piece of plaster sheared off and smashed into the water beside her.

Suddenly, a pair of strong hands gripped the iron bar beside hers.

Eleanor looked up through the spraying water.

Julian was there. His five-thousand-dollar tuxedo jacket was gone; his white shirt was soaked, torn, and covered in black grease. His face was streaked with soot and tears, but for the first time in ten years, his eyes were clear, focused, and free of vanity.

""On three, Mom!"" Julian shouted over the roar of the water. ""One... two... THREE!""

Together, mother and son threw their combined weight into the lever.

With a deafening screech of tearing metal, the rusted release valve gave way. The massive hydraulic drainage gates on the outer wall groaned open, creating a powerful vortex that began sucking thousands of gallons of water out into the city storm tunnels, relieving the catastrophic pressure on the cracked retention wall.

Julian grabbed his mother by the waist just as the suction nearly pulled her off her feet, lifting her out of the main current and setting her down on the elevated concrete catwalk near the emergency exit.

They collapsed against the concrete wall together, coughing violently, soaked to the bone, listening to the water recede and the violent groaning of the steel slowly settle into a stable, quiet hum.

The building had held.

Julian slumped beside his mother, burying his face in his trembling, calloused hands, and wept like a terrified, broken child.

""I'm sorry,"" he sobbed, his voice lost beneath the flashing red sirens. ""I'm so sorry, Mom... I forgot. I forgot everything you taught me.""

Eleanor reached out an exhausted, shivering hand and placed it gently on the back of her son’s neck.

May you like

""You remembered in time, Julian,"" she whispered softly. ""You remembered in time.""
