Chapter 4: The Sins of the Son

Inside the envelope were thirty-two documents, hand-drafted, stamped by the Supreme Judicial Court of New York from twenty years prior.

Among them was a single, faded photograph: a young, tired Eleanor in a grease-stained canvas apron, holding an infant Julian while drawing the foundational cross-section of the very tower they were standing in.

The elevator chimed again.

Julian and Chloe rushed into the penthouse, breathing heavily. Chloe looked around the vast, minimalist drafting room with frantic bewilderment, while Julian looked like a condemned man walking toward the gallows.

""Mother,"" Julian pleaded, dropping all formal pretense. He took three hurried steps toward her, his hands outstretched. ""Listen to me. Please. Don't do this here. Not tonight. The Mayor is downstairs. The Sterling Group is preparing to merge their entire land portfolio with us tomorrow morning. If you execute that trust revocation, the firm goes into receivership. We lose everything!""

""Who is 'we', Julian?"" Eleanor asked, not raising her voice.

""Our family!"" Julian shouted, a crack of desperation breaking through his polished exterior. ""Everything I did, I did to keep the Vance name at the absolute peak of the industry!""

""You didn't do it for the family, Julian,"" Eleanor said, looking down at the legal documents on the table. ""You did it for applause. You were ashamed of where you came from. You were ashamed that your mother built this empire with dirt under her fingernails and calluses on her palms.""

Chloe stepped forward, her voice trembling between rage and terror. ""Do you have any idea who my father is? Arthur Sterling will tie you up in litigation for twenty years! You are an old, sick woman with a worthless scrap of paper!""

Eleanor looked at Chloe. There was no hatred in Eleanor's gaze, only a deep, sorrowful pity.

""Chloe, my dear,"" Eleanor said softly. ""Your father didn't build his fortune by being stupid. Why do you think he agreed to let you marry Julian in the first place?""

Chloe froze.

""Arthur Sterling knew who held the master deed,"" Eleanor continued calmly. ""He knew Julian had no real equity without my signature. Your father has been waiting for this exact envelope to surface for five years. He wanted Julian to make a catastrophic mistake so he could absorb this tower for pennies on the dollar.""

Chloe's phone buzzed sharply in her designer clutch. She pulled it out with trembling hands.

The screen displayed a text from her father:
