Chapter 5: The Cracking Pillar

Before Chloe could scream, a low, ominous vibration rolled through the floorboards beneath their feet.

It was not the sound of thunder. It was the sickening, metallic groan of high-tensile steel under sudden, catastrophic stress.

The pendant lights suspended from the high cedar ceiling swayed gently. A glass jar filled with vintage drafting pencils on Eleanor’s desk rattled against the wood.

Julian instinctively grabbed the edge of a drafting table. ""What was that? An earthquake?""

""No,"" Eleanor said, her eyes snapping to the structural monitoring panel mounted on the north wall—a digital interface she had discreetly integrated into the building's core decades ago.

The digital lights on the panel were flashing amber, rapidly transitioning into solid, angry red.

""The lower parking garage,"" Eleanor said, her voice turning razor-sharp with technical precision. ""The eastern retention wall has failed. The underground water main from the municipal canal just breached the foundation slab.""

Julian’s face went dead white. ""The... the inspector said we had another year before the waterproofing degraded.""

""You ignored hydraulic pressure for quarterly profits,"" Eleanor said, grabbing her old coat. ""There are three hundred people in the grand ballroom directly above the sub-level support pillars. If the water compromises the secondary load beams, the entire south wing will pancake in twenty minutes.""

""Call 911! Call building security!"" Chloe shrieked, backing toward the elevator in blind panic.

""Security cannot override the automated pressure locks once the lower levels flood,"" Eleanor said, pulling a heavy brass master key from the bottom of the envelope. ""The only manual release for the drainage sluice is in the sub-basement pump room.""

She looked at her son.

""Julian. You are the chief structural engineer of this firm. You took the oath. Are you coming with me to save those people, or are you going to run?""

May you like

Julian stood rooted to the floor, his limbs shaking violently, completely unmanned by the reality of the disaster he had manufactured.
