Chapter 11: Letters from the Past
That night, in the quiet of Penthouse 101, Eleanor sat by the large cedar desk with a cup of chamomile tea.
The room had been partially repurposed as the central archive for the new foundation. On the desk lay several boxes of old letters and blueprints that Bernard had retrieved from the safe-deposit vault in Boston.
Julian entered quietly, carrying a small toolbox to repair the loose brass hinge on the balcony door.
""Mom,"" Julian said, setting his tools down. ""You shouldn't stay up so late. The doctors said you need to rest your joints.""
""I have rested enough, Julian,"" Eleanor said with a faint laugh. ""When you get to my age, sleep feels like a waste of remaining time.""
She gestured for him to sit in the wooden chair beside her.
Julian pulled the chair up, wiping his hands on his canvas trousers. On the desk, he noticed an old, yellowed envelope addressed to him in his mother's handwriting, postmarked fifteen years ago.
""What is that?"" Julian asked.
""A letter I wrote to you the day you graduated top of your class from Columbia,"" Eleanor said softly, pushing the envelope toward him. ""I never mailed it.""
Julian carefully opened the brittle paper and read the faded words:
*Julian,* *Today you step into a world that will try to convince you that success is measured by how many people bow to you. Do not believe them. Success is measured by how many people you can shelter from the storm. If you ever lose your way, look at your hands. If they are clean while those around you bleed, you have built your house upon sand.*
Julian stared at the page, a single tear escaping his eye and dropping onto the yellowed paper, blurring the ink of his own name.
""I lost my way for so long, Mom,"" Julian whispered, his voice cracking.
