Chapter 8 - The Ultimatum in the Grass

Arthur stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes locked on the small metal flash drive gleaming in Sarah’s palm against the fading twilight. The rhythmic flashing of the police cruisers in the distance cast pulsing crimson and cobalt shadows across her tear-stained face, highlighting an expression of cold, resolute determination he had never seen in her before.

“Sarah, put that down,” Arthur said, his voice dropping to a tense, urgent whisper as he took a cautious step forward. “You don’t understand what’s on that drive. If that data falls into the wrong hands, the global energy grid could be weaponized within forty-eight hours. That’s why I kept it hidden!”

“And you think keeping it hidden in a secret vault beneath our daughter’s bedroom was a safer alternative?” Sarah fired back, her voice shaking with adrenaline as she clutched the drive tighter against her chest. “You’ve spent years lying to my face, playing house while harboring stolen nuclear-grade research, and you expect me to just trust your judgment now? My entire life is a manufactured fiction, Arthur—or whatever your real name is!”

Lily burrowed her face into Sarah’s side, crying softly, overwhelmed by the chaos, the smoke, and the terrifying shouting echoing from the front yard of their burning home.

“Mommy, I want to go home. I want my own bed,” the little girl sobbed, her small shoulders shaking uncontrollably.

Sarah’s eyes softened momentarily as she looked down at her daughter, but her jaw remained tightly set. She looked back up at Arthur, her gaze returning to steel.

“We don’t have a home anymore, Lily,” Sarah whispered softly to the child before turning her fierce gaze back to Arthur. “Listen to me very carefully, David. You are going to tell me right now who is chasing us, why they want this technology, and what happened to the real Arthur Miller, or I walk out into that street right now and hand this drive directly to the federal agents.”

Arthur felt a cold sweat break out across his neck. He knew Sarah; once she made up her mind, she was immovable. If she walked out onto that suburban street with the drive, the shadowy syndicate would intercept her within minutes, and everything he had tried to protect would be lost forever.

“Okay,” Arthur breathed, holding his hands up in a gesture of absolute surrender as he slowly knelt in the damp grass. “I’ll tell you everything. But you need to know that the men in those cruisers aren’t ordinary FBI agents. They work for Project Prometheus—the private defense contractor that funded our research and murdered my lab partner when he tried to shut the project down.”

Before Sarah could process the staggering accusation, a red laser dot flickered sharply across Arthur’s chest.
