Chapter 2 - The Envelope on the Desk

Arthur’s boots crunched softly against a thin layer of fine grey dust as he walked toward the wooden desk sitting squarely in the middle of the subterranean vault. The air down here smelled faintly of old paper, aged copper, and a sharp chemical preservative that stung the back of his throat. He reached out with a trembling hand, his fingers hesitating for a fraction of a second before brushing against the smooth, manila surface of the envelope. It felt heavy, weighted down by something dense and rigid folded inside its thick paper walls.
From the doorway, Sarah’s shadow stretched long and distorted across the concrete floor as she leaned forward, her eyes scanning the dim interior of the chamber with a mixture of dread and fierce suspicion.
“Don’t touch it, Arthur!” Sarah commanded, her voice dropping to a harsh, urgent whisper that echoed off the damp concrete walls. “We need to call the police right now. This isn’t right. None of this is normal!”
“The police won’t understand any of this, Sarah,” Arthur replied without turning around, his voice low and strained as he lifted the envelope off the desk. A small, metallic clink sounded as something heavy shifted inside the paper casing. “If I call the authorities, everything we’ve built, everything we are, vanishes in a single afternoon.”
“We vanished the moment you broke open that wall, Arthur!” Sarah stepped across the threshold, ignoring his warning as she planted her feet firmly on the concrete floor. Lily hovered timidly behind her skirt, clutching a small wooden doll she had grabbed from the living room shelf. “Look at me and tell me the truth. Whose handwriting is that on the front of the envelope? Because we both know damn well it isn’t yours.”
Arthur swallowed hard, his thumb tracing the embossed seal stamped onto the back flap of the envelope. It was a wax seal bearing the distinct crest of a university he had not attended in over a decade—an institution he had supposedly dropped out of before meeting Sarah.
“It’s from a life I left behind, Sarah,” Arthur said quietly, his eyes refusing to meet hers. “A life I thought I buried deep enough so it could never reach us here in this quiet town.”

“Secrets don’t stay buried in houses built on lies, Arthur,” a strange, raspy voice echoed suddenly from the far dark corner of the vault, shattering the heavy silence and freezing all three of them in their tracks.
