Chapter 5 - The Knock on the Front Door

The echo of Dr. Harrison’s final warning hung heavily in the confined space of the subterranean vault, freezing everyone in place. Before Arthur could formulate a denial, a sharp, rhythmic pounding echoed from upstairs through the open drywall breach—three heavy, deliberate knocks followed by the metallic jingle of keys against wood.

Sarah’s breath hitched in her throat. Her eyes snapped from Arthur to the dark opening of the vault, terror instantly replacing the shock of betrayal on her face.

“Who is that?” Sarah whispered frantically, grabbing Lily by the hand and pulling the little girl behind her as far away from the doorway as possible. “Arthur, did you tell someone where we live? Did you invite them here?”

Arthur’s face turned deathly pale. All the color drained from his skin as he listened to the heavy footsteps moving across the hardwood floor of the living room above them. The footsteps were measured, heavy, and entirely unhurried—the unmistakable sound of trained professionals moving with absolute tactical precision.

“No,” Arthur breathed, panic finally breaking through his composed exterior. “I didn’t tell anyone. No one knew this house existed except us.”

“Well, someone clearly knows!” Dr. Harrison muttered under his breath, slipping quietly into the shadows behind the filing cabinets. “They tracked the energy signature of the vault core. You turned it on this morning, didn’t you, David? You calibrated the frequency, and you lit up like a beacon on a military radar.”

Arthur cursed under his breath, realizing the catastrophic mistake he had made during his routine morning maintenance of the vault’s backup generator.

Upstairs, a deep, authoritative voice boomed through the open living room, clearly audible down in the subterranean chamber.

“Open the front door immediately. Federal Bureau of Investigation. We have a warrant for the arrest of David Sterling under suspicion of espionage and industrial sabotage.”

Sarah stared at Arthur, her expression shifting from heartbreak to sheer, unadulterated disbelief as the name echoed through her home.

“David Sterling?” Sarah repeated the name, her voice trembling with rising hysteria. “Your name isn’t even Arthur? Who the hell have I been married to for the last eight years?”

“Sarah, I’ll explain everything, I swear to you, but we have to get out of here right now through the utility tunnel in the back,” Arthur pleaded, lunging forward to grab her hand, but she violently jerked her wrist away from his grasp.

“Don’t touch me!” Sarah screamed, her eyes blazing with fury as heavy boots began marching directly toward the bedroom hallway.
