Chapter 12 - The Unexpected Ally

The heavy metal door locked into place with a deep, echoing thud, plunging the cavernous interior of the abandoned warehouse into profound darkness. Arthur stumbled backward over an empty wooden pallet, pulling Sarah and Lily down with him as the frantic sound of boots running past the exterior wall faded into the distance.
“Keep your voices down if you want to keep breathing,” a gruff, familiar voice muttered from the shadows near a rusted forklift.
A single incandescent work light flickered to life overhead, casting a sickly yellow glow over a dusty concrete floor piled high with old automotive parts and crates. Standing by the light switch was an older man with a thick grey beard, wearing a grease-stained canvas jacket and holding a heavy caliber hunting rifle resting casually against his shoulder.
Arthur blinked against the sudden glare, a wave of profound relief washing over his tense features.
“Marcus?” Arthur breathed out, staggering to his feet. “Thank God. I didn’t think you’d still be working out of this old depot.”
Marcus lowered his rifle slightly, his sharp, weathered eyes narrowing as he looked past Arthur to Sarah and the terrified little girl clutching her skirt.
“I keep a low profile, David—or whatever name you’re hiding behind this week,” Marcus said gruffly, spitting a wad of tobacco onto the dusty floor. “Word travels fast through the underground network when Prometheus reactivates its cleanup crews. I saw the smoke from your suburban house burning all the way from my ridge.”
Sarah stepped forward, her eyes blazing with exhaustion and desperate resolve as she pulled the small metal flash drive from her pocket and held it up under the yellow work light.
“Are you Marcus? The lab assistant David talked about?” Sarah demanded, her voice cutting through the damp air like a knife. “If you want to help us, you need to tell me right now what this drive contains and why men are willing to murder a six-year-old child to get it.”
Marcus looked at the flash drive, then at Arthur, letting out a long, weary sigh as he ran a calloused hand through his thick grey hair.
“That little drive contains the master algorithm for the Helios Grid, Mrs. Sterling—or whatever her last name is,” Marcus explained, walking over to an old workbench cluttered with soldering irons and circuit boards. “Ten years ago, we realized the energy output wasn’t just capable of powering cities; it could be tuned to create a localized electromagnetic pulse capable of wiping out every digital communications network on the eastern seaboard in a single second.”
Sarah gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as the horrifying magnitude of Arthur’s secret finally crystallized in her mind.
“You built an EMP weapon disguised as a green energy grid?” Sarah whispered, staring at Arthur with a look of pure devastation.
“We built a deterrent, Sarah, but Prometheus wanted to use it to collapse the global financial markets and seize control of government infrastructures,” Arthur pleaded, stepping toward her.

Before Sarah could reply, a deafening explosion blasted the warehouse’s side door off its heavy hinges.
