Chapter 9 - The Subterranean Shift

The floor beneath the steel lab tiles shuddered violently, throwing Julian off balance and forcing him to grab the edge of Dr. Evans’ desk to stay upright.

“What is happening?” Dr. Evans shouted over the grinding roar of heavy machinery echoing from deep beneath the foundation.

Walter stood firm, his dark t-shirt stretching as he maintained his grip on the encrypted radio transmitter while the red light on its casing blinked at an accelerating rate.

“The facility isn't just a medical charity, Julian,” Walter shouted, his voice cutting through the mechanical din. “It’s a designated federal relocation vault built during the Cold War, and right now, the primary blast shields are sealing us in permanently.”

Clara tapped furiously on her encrypted tablet, her face pale as warning graphics flashed across her screen in brilliant crimson.

“The uplink isn't an offshore server, Walter,” Clara yelled over the noise, panic finally breaking through her calm exterior. “It’s a direct connection to the Department of Defense orbital network!”

Julian pushed himself away from the desk, lunging across the room and grabbing Walter by the collar of his dark t-shirt with both hands.

“Turn it off!” Julian roared, shaking Walter with desperate strength. “You’re sealing a federal quarantine zone with us inside it!”

Walter didn't flinch; he looked Julian dead in the eye, a grim smile touching the corners of his mouth.

“You built this place to hide your grandfather's sins, Julian,” Walter said evenly. “Now you get to protect them from the outside world for the rest of your life.”

Dr. Evans scrambled out of his chair, reaching for the silver revolver resting on the steel desk, but before his fingers could touch the grip, a loud pneumatic hiss echoed from the ceiling.

A heavy, interlocking sheet of solid steel dropped from the overhead ventilation grate, slamming directly between Dr. Evans and the desk, cutting off the doctor’s path completely.

Julian released Walter and jumped back as a ring of thick, industrial bolts fired out from the walls, locking the steel perimeter panels into place with deafening cracks.

“The exits are gone,” Clara said, her voice dropping to a stunned whisper as she stared at the solid wall of metal sealing off the laboratory entrance.

Julian turned around slowly, the reality of their imprisonment setting in as the emergency lights flickered once more, settling into a steady, amber glow that illuminated the desolate, empty room.

“We’re trapped,” Julian said quietly, his gaze shifting from the sealed steel walls back to Walter, who was calmly slipping the transmitter into his pocket.

Walter walked slowly toward the center of the room, stopping near one of the empty glass containment pods that mirrored their tense reflections in the dim light.

“We aren't trapped, Julian,” Walter corrected softly. “We’re secure.”

Before anyone could reply, the floor beneath them dropped six inches with a sudden, stomach-churning jolt, and the entire subterranean laboratory began to descend smoothly into the pitch-black earth below.
