Chapter 8 - The Purge Complete

The green checkmark on the central monitor remained illuminated for three agonizing seconds before the screen flickered, hissed, and permanently went black.

“The data is gone,” Clara announced, staring at her encrypted tablet as all remote telemetry links dropped simultaneously. “Every file, every log, every trace of the neural mapping trials has been wiped clean from the primary servers and all off-site mirrors.”

Dr. Evans leaned back in his leather chair, closing his eyes as if a crushing weight had finally been lifted from his shoulders.

“It’s over,” the doctor murmured, his voice barely audible above the hum of the dying auxiliary generator. “The board can't blackmail anyone with a memory they can no longer access.”

Julian ignored the computer screen, his focus entirely locked on the massive glass observation window overlooking the subterranean reservoir.

“You contaminated the water supply,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper as he walked slowly toward the glass.

Dr. Evans opened his eyes, meeting Julian’s intense gaze without flinching.

“It’s not toxic to the public, Julian,” the doctor explained calmly. “It’s a neural neutralizer. It breaks down the synthetic oil compounds in the municipal pipes before they can reach the city’s drinking reserves.”

Walter stepped up beside Julian, pressing his face against the thick reinforced glass to look down into the dark, churning water below.

“He’s telling the truth about the neutralizer,” Walter said, pointing down at a faint, iridescent sheen on the surface of the water that was rapidly dissolving into harmless foam. “The yellow oil is breaking down on contact.”

Julian let out a long, ragged breath, feeling the unbearable tension in his shoulders ease just fractionally, though the underlying dread remained firmly planted in his chest.

“If the trials are gone, and the evidence is neutralized, why did you lock the doors upstairs, Walter?” Julian asked, spinning around to face his associate with sharp suspicion in his eyes.

Walter turned away from the observation window, his face hardening into an expression Julian had never seen before—cold, calculating, and entirely detached.

“Because the board wasn't the only group watching this facility, Julian,” Walter said, reaching inside his jacket and pulling out a heavy, encrypted radio transmitter.

Clara stepped back instantly, her blue scrubs rustling as she distanced herself from Walter and reached for the silver ID bracelet on her wrist.

“Put the transmitter down, Walter,” Clara ordered, her tone shifting from a helpful subordinate to an authoritative commander. “The extraction team is already parked in the upper courtyard.”

Julian stared back and forth between them, realizing with sudden, brutal clarity that he had been nothing more than a figurehead for a much larger, darker operation.

“You didn't come here to expose the trials,” Julian said, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. “You came here to secure the physical specimens before the extraction team arrived.”

Walter pressed a flashing red button on the transmitter, and a heavy, mechanical rumble shook the foundation beneath their feet.

“We came to collect the architect, Julian,” Walter replied quietly as the subterranean floor began to shift beneath their boots.
