Chapter 5 - The Descent

The hiss of escaping air drowned out the rhythmic wail of the crimson emergency klaxons as the hidden elevator shaft vented a cloud of cold, sterile mist into the hallway.

Julian coughed, waving his hand in front of his face to clear the vapor while keeping his grip firm on the rusted iron wheel valve.

“The pressure is stabilizing,” Clara called out over the din, her eyes glued to the blinking screen of her encrypted tablet. “The sub-level containment door is holding, but the internal temperature in the lab has dropped below freezing.”

Julian let go of the valve, wiping a layer of condensation from his palms onto his dark suit trousers as he peered down into the yawning black abyss of the newly exposed elevator shaft.

“Is there power to the cage?” Julian asked, his voice strained as he strained his eyes to spot the steel platform below.

Walter stepped up beside him, peering down into the darkness without a hint of fear, his dark t-shirt fluttering slightly in the draft of the venting air.

“Power was cut ten minutes ago,” Walter replied flatly. “If we want to get down to the subterranean lab before Dr. Evans destroys the hard drives, we have to take the maintenance ladder.”

Julian looked at Clara, searching her face for any sign of deception, but her blue scrubs were still, her red ID bracelet catching the red flashing light with every micro-movement.

“Why are you helping me now, Walter?” Julian asked quietly, ignoring the ladder for a crucial moment. “You just spent twenty minutes proving I’m running an illegal shadow facility.”

Walter turned his head slowly, locking eyes with Julian in the crimson gloom.

“Because an illegal medical trial is a corporate crime we can prosecute in a federal court,” Walter said, his tone deadly serious. “What Dr. Evans is about to release down there isn't a cure. It’s a weapon.”

Julian processed the gravity of Walter’s words, realizing that the neurological pathogen they had developed wasn't designed to save terminal patients—it was designed to erase memories entirely.

“He’s going to wipe the trial records by purging the neural core,” Julian realized aloud, his blood running cold.

“Which means every patient down there will lose their identity permanently,” Clara added, stepping forward to grip the rusted rungs of the vertical maintenance ladder built into the shaft wall. “Including the whistleblowers who tried to shut this place down last year.”

Julian didn't hesitate another second. He gripped the cold iron rungs, put his foot on the first step, and began his descent into the subterranean darkness, knowing the truth waiting at the bottom was far worse than anything he had imagined.

“Stay close,” Julian instructed over his shoulder as the metal rungs rattled beneath his boots.

They climbed down in silence for several minutes until the ladder ended abruptly in front of a heavy steel blast door marked with a glowing yellow biohazard symbol.

Julian reached out, pressed his palm against the biometric scanner beside the door, and waited for the red light to turn green, but instead of unlocking, the screen flickered and displayed a single word in flashing amber text: OVERRIDE.
