Chapter 13 - The Breach Below

The massive central screen flickered violently, replacing the live feed of the upstairs hallway with a grainy, high-contrast security angle from deep beneath Sector Zero.
“That’s Sub-Level Two,” Dr. Evans whispered, his eyes wide as he recognized the rusted iron catwalks and reinforced concrete pillars on the monitor. “No one has accessed those chambers since the containment leak thirty years ago.”
Julian stepped closer to the console, watching the screen as a thick cloud of yellow vapor billowed outward from the newly breached blast door, exactly like the oil puddle they had encountered upstairs.
“Someone is down there,” Julian stated, his voice flat and resolute. “And they brought the same synthetic oil compounds with them.”
Walter gripped the edge of the metal console, his knuckles turning white as he watched the grainy footage capture a lone figure stepping out of the vapor cloud.
“That’s not possible,” Walter muttered under his breath, leaning closer to the screen. “The primary containment vault was welded shut from the outside with five tons of solid lead-reinforced steel.”
Clara tapped frantically on her tablet, trying to re-establish telemetry links with the lower sub-levels, but every data packet was instantly rejected by an encrypted firewall.
“The firewall isn't ours,” Clara announced, her face draining of all color as a string of unknown code began populating her screen. “It’s running on a legacy military protocol that predates the foundation entirely.”
Julian turned his gaze from the monitor to Walter, sensing that the intricate web of secrets went far deeper than anyone had admitted.
“You said this facility was built to protect the research, Walter,” Julian said coldly. “Who is locked down there in the dark?”
Walter didn't answer immediately; he stood motionless, staring at the screen as the lone figure on the monitor slowly walked up to the camera and looked directly into the lens.
Even through the grainy, black-and-white security footage, the face was unmistakably familiar—sharing the exact same sharp jawline, intense eyes, and dark hair as Julian himself.
“Your grandfather,” Dr. Evans breathed out, stumbling backward until he hit a server rack. “Arthur Vance didn't die in nineteen-eighty. He went into the vault.”
Julian felt the room spin slightly as the implications crashed over him like a tidal wave.
“He’s been down there all this time?” Julian asked, his voice barely a whisper.
Before Walter could speak, the entire subterranean terminal plunged into total darkness as the auxiliary generator failed, leaving only the dim, pulsing crimson glow of the emergency alarms.

Through the heavy silence of the dead servers, a mechanical heavy metal door at the back of the terminal slowly began to unlock with a loud, echoing click.
