Chapter 2 - The False Patient

The heavy iron locks clicked into place with a mechanical finality that reverberated through Julian’s chest.

“You’re working together,” Julian stated, not as a question, but as an indictment of the woman he had trusted to manage the facility's night shift.

The nurse, whose red ID bracelet read Clara Vance, brushed a strand of brown hair from her forehead and stood completely upright, her blue scrubs suddenly looking less like a uniform and more like a costume.

“We aren't working against you, Julian,” Clara said, her tone infuriatingly reasonable as she stepped over the puddle of yellow oil without slipping a single inch. “We are protecting the foundation from your negligence.”

Julian clenched his fists inside the pockets of his dark suit trousers, his eyes darting from Clara to Walter, who had now reached the bottom of the grand staircase.

“Negligence?” Julian hissed, careful to keep his voice controlled in the cavernous hallway. “I’ve poured millions of my own inheritance into this medical charity to keep experimental treatments off the black market.”

“And you’ve channeled an equal amount into private accounts in the Caymans,” Walter countered, pulling a folded manila folder from the back of his trousers and tossing it onto the silver tray.

The manila folder slid across the marble, stopping right at Julian’s shiny leather shoes.

Julian didn't look down at the folder. He kept his gaze locked on Walter, recognizing the exact brand of corporate betrayal that had destroyed his father’s legacy twenty years ago.

“Those documents were encrypted,” Julian said coldly. “No one outside the board had the decryption key.”

“People change their minds when they realize who’s really funding your humanitarian work,” Clara added, stepping closer to Walter. “It’s not pharmaceutical companies, Julian. It’s the very syndicate you claim to be fighting.”

The air in the hallway grew noticeably colder as the ventilation system hummed a low, ominous note overhead.

Julian slowly bent down, his fingers brushing against the rough cardboard of the folder, knowing that opening it would change his life forever.

“Open it,” Walter urged, stepping into the dim light. “See what your grandfather left behind in the basement vaults.”

Julian pulled the string loose, slid out the top photograph, and stopped breathing entirely as the image revealed a secret operating room directly beneath their feet.
