Chapter 8 - The Federal Protocol

The heavy brass buttons on the federal marshals' tactical vests gleamed under the recessed kitchen lights, casting long, sharp shadows across the marble floor. The lead marshal, a tall man with a severe military posture and piercing blue eyes, stepped smoothly out of the elevator, his boots making a heavy, deliberate sound against the polished stone. He didn't look at Teresa, nor did he acknowledge Julianna; his gaze locked instantly onto David, who was still sitting in a pathetic heap against the base of the island.

"David Vance?" the marshal asked, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that brooked no argument.

David didn't answer. He stared down at his own trembling hands, his chest heaving with shallow, panicked breaths. The blue button-down shirt that had once symbolized his corporate dominance now felt like a badge of absolute failure.

The marshal didn't wait for a verbal confirmation. He stepped forward, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his tactical belt with practiced ease. "You are being placed under federal arrest pursuant to an indictment issued by the United States District Court for securities fraud, corporate identity theft, and interstate wire embezzlement."

"Wait—you can't do this!" Teresa shrieked, springing up from the ottoman like a coiled spring, throwing herself between the marshal and her son. "My son is a pillar of this community! You have no idea who you're dealing with! Call his lawyers! Call the governor!"

Marcus, the private security lead, gently but firmly caught Teresa by the shoulders, steering her away from the marshal with professional ease despite her frantic thrashing and high-pitched wails. "Step back, ma'am. Interfering with federal officers is a separate felony charge."

The marshal hoisted David up by his arms, hauling him to his feet with effortless strength. David’s legs wobbled unsteadily, his eyes meeting Clara’s across the kitchen. There was no triumph in Clara’s expression—only a profound, chilling emptiness, as if she were looking at a stranger she had long since mourned and buried.

"Clara," David choked out, his voice cracking with desperate pleading. "Please... ten years. Think of everything we shared. Don't let them take me out in handcuffs like a common criminal. We can fix this. I'll sign over whatever you want—just tell them to stop!"

Clara took a slow step forward, her white sleeveless dress whispering against the marble floor. She stopped just inches away from him, the scent of her jasmine perfume mixing with the cold air of the penthouse.

"The time for fixing things was ten years ago, David," Clara said softly, her voice barely above a whisper, yet every word cut like a razor blade. "When your mother tried to evict me from my own home on our wedding anniversary, you told me to be the bigger person. When she forged my name on the initial household deeds, you looked the other way. You made your choice every single day you chose her comfort over our partnership."

The marshal gave David a firm shove toward the elevator. "Let's move, Mr. Vance. Rights are being read on the way down."

As the heavy security doors closed, sealing David inside the elevator with the federal agents, Teresa let out a blood-curdling scream of pure agony, collapsing onto the floor in a heap of black cotton and beige fabric. She clawed at the polished stone tiles, her manicured nails scratching against the marble as the digital floor indicator began its steady descent from the sixty-fourth floor down to the subterranean parking garage.

Julianna watched the digital numbers tick downward before turning to Clara, holding out a sleek encrypted tablet. "The primary asset freeze is complete, Clara. But there's something in the secondary offshore server that just decrypted itself. You need to see this right now."
