Chapter 6 - The Descent to Reality

The heavy oak doors of the master bedroom clicked shut behind Marcus and his partner as they systematically cleared the remaining closets of unauthorized luxury goods. The sound of velvet hangers sliding rapidly across metal racks echoed through the opulent hallway like falling timber. Teresa sat slumped on a velvet ottoman near the foyer, stripped of her diamond rings, her pearl necklace, and her arrogant defiance, looking remarkably small and defeated in her black button-down shirt and beige pants.
David remained standing by the marble kitchen island, staring blankly at his own hands. The platinum watch was gone; his corporate access was revoked; his mother’s illusion of eternal entitlement had shattered into dust against the cold reality of corporate law. Yet, the most terrifying part wasn't the loss of wealth—it was the sudden, blinding realization of his own utter insignificance without Clara behind him.
"Clara," David croaked out, his throat dry and scratchy as he watched her calmly pour a cup of black coffee from the automated espresso machine. "Please. There has to be a way we can resolve this privately. We don't need to involve the courts, and we certainly don't need to ruin our family name over a boardroom coup."
Clara took a slow, deliberate sip of the dark roast, letting the steam rise past her delicate jawline. She didn't look at him immediately, treating his desperate plea with the quiet indifference one might afford a buzzing insect against a windowpane.
"Your family name, David?" Clara finally murmured, setting the ceramic cup down with a soft click. "The very name you and your mother dragged through the mud by treating my inheritance like a bottomless ATM? The name you used to secure loans for shell companies while forging my initials on the collateral agreements?"
David flinched as if struck by a physical blow. His head snapped up, his eyes widening in sheer panic. "How... how could you possibly know about the shell companies? That account was encrypted through a Swiss offshore server!"
Clara offered a cold, humorless chuckle. "Did you really think your father left me completely unprotected for ten years, David? He knew your spending habits better than you did. Every offshore transfer you made was automatically mirrored to a compliance server controlled directly by the corporate board of directors. You were never operating in secret; you were simply running on a very long, very fragile leash."
Teresa let out a pathetic whimash moan from the ottoman, rocking back and forth with her hands clutching her empty wrists where her bracelets used to be. "It's all her fault, David! She plotted this from the very beginning! She trapped you into marrying her just so she could steal our legacy!"
Before David could respond, a sharp chime echoed from the main elevator bank in the private foyer. The heavy security doors slid open with a smooth mechanical hiss, revealing not police officers, but two middle-aged men in tailored charcoal suits carrying heavy leather briefcases. They were the senior partners of Sterling & Vance Legal Counsel, the firm Clara’s father had founded decades ago.
"Good afternoon, Madam Chair," the lead attorney, an older gentleman with silver temples named Harrison, said respectfully, bowing slightly toward Clara. "The emergency injunction has been successfully filed with the federal district court. All personal and commercial assets belonging to David Vance and Teresa Vance have been officially frozen pending criminal indictment."
David stared at Harrison in absolute horror, his knees finally buckling. He slid down the side of the marble counter until he hit the floor, sitting amidst the very same clothes Teresa had thrown around just twenty minutes earlier.

Harrison stepped into the kitchen, ignoring the pathetic heap of the Vance family entirely, and handed Clara a crisp manila envelope. "There is one final matter regarding the primary residential deed, ma'am. The new tenants are scheduled to arrive downstairs at precisely five o'clock."
