Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

The stark white notification banner flashed silently across Clara’s smartphone screen, casting a cold blue light over her composed features. Neither Teresa nor David noticed the small text scrolling beneath the system alert, too intoxicated by their immediate victory. Teresa was already pocketing the heavy brass key, her shoulders squaring as she assumed the mantle of domestic commander-in-chief in a home she had never earned.

"Pack your overnight bag, Clara," David said, his tone flat and administrative, as if he were firing a mid-level accountant rather than discarding his wife of ten years. "Mom arranged a suite at the boutique hotel down the block. We’ll handle the asset division through our attorneys on Monday morning. Don't make a scene."

Clara tilted her head, her brown hair falling like a silken curtain over her shoulder. She looked at the man she had supported through law school, through the grueling early years of his father’s failing firm, and through every quiet humiliation Teresa had orchestrated behind closed doors. She remembered the nights she had ghost-written his briefs while he slept, the sleepless weeks she spent securing the venture capital that built his current empire.

"A hotel," Clara repeated softly, tasting the word as if it were poison. "How very generous of you, David. Did you check your corporate portal before you packed my life into these garbage bags?"

David frowned, pulling his own phone from his grey trousers. "What are you talking about? Stop playing games, Clara. The board meeting was yesterday; my position as senior managing partner is entirely secure. Mom and I reviewed the restructuring documents last night."

Teresa bristled, stepping between them. "Don't listen to her desperate lies, David! She's trying to manipulate you because she can't bear the thought of losing her social standing. Call security and have her escorted off the premises right now before I lose my temper again."

Instead of moving toward the door, Clara took two deliberate steps forward, closing the distance between them with predatory grace. She held her phone out, not to record, but to display a single, highly sensitive dashboard interface that made David’s face drain of all color instantly. The screen did not show their domestic dispute; it displayed the master corporate registry of Vance Global Enterprises.

David snatched the phone from her hand, his eyes darting across the glowing lines of code and financial logs. His breathing hitched, turning into a shallow, panicked gasp as his thumb frantically scrolled down to the ownership hierarchy.

"No," David whispered, his voice cracking violently. "This... this is impossible. The primary shares are held in the family trust. Mom is the trustee!"

Clara reached out with agonizing slowness, her index finger tapping the screen to reveal the ultimate administrative override. "Trusts can be amended, David. Especially when the original founder signed over sole voting power three days ago as collateral for a massive, unrecorded corporate bailout."

Teresa snatched the phone from her son’s trembling hand, squinting at the glowing text. Her face twisted into a mask of pure terror as she read the name listed as the supreme majority shareholder and executive controller of every single asset they possessed.
