Chapter 5 - The Inventory of Exile

The two private security guards stood like monolithic statues on either side of the kitchen island, completely neutralizing Teresa’s frantic thrashing. Teresa tried to twist away, her face purple with indignation, screaming obscenities about lawsuits, police corruption, and familial betrayal, but the guards simply absorbed her assault with stoic indifference. David remained pressed against the marble counter, his legs seeming to have lost all ability to support his weight.

"You can't do this," David stammered, his hands gripping the edge of the stone as if holding onto a sinking ship. "Clara, please. We've been together for ten years. We built a life here. You can't just throw us out into the street over a corporate dispute!"

Clara turned slowly, her posture radiating absolute command. She reached down to the floor where Teresa had scattered her clothes just minutes earlier, picking up a crumpled silk blouse that David had undoubtedly bought with company dividends. She held it up by two fingers, examining the fabric with feigned clinical interest before letting it drop back onto the dirty floor tiles.

"A life, David?" Clara asked, her voice dripping with lethal irony. "Is that what you call a decade of watching your mother systematically dismantle my dignity while you sat back and nodded in agreement? Is that what you call hiding your financial indiscretions behind my signature while planning my silent eviction?"

David opened his mouth, but no words came out. His mind was racing through a decade of suppressed memories, suddenly realizing how many times Clara had quietly bailed out his failing accounts, how many times she had smoothed over his catastrophic management errors with the board without ever asking for praise or recognition. He had mistaken her quiet patience for weakness, her grace for submission.

"The luggage, Marcus," Clara instructed without breaking eye contact with her crumbling husband.

The lead security guard nodded sharply. He reached into his coat pocket and withdrew a thick, leather-bound folio, tossing it onto the marble island right next to Teresa’s scattered purse. The gold-embossed lettering on the cover read Asset Liquidation and Restitution Directive.

"Pursuant to Section 9 of the Vance Global restructuring charter," Marcus recited in a monotone voice, "all personal property acquired using embezzled corporate funds must be surrendered for independent forensic audit. This includes vehicles, luxury watches, designer clothing, and secondary residential deeds."

Teresa stopped struggling, her eyes bulging as she stared at the leather folio. "No! My jewelry! My mink coats! Those were gifts from my late husband! You can't touch them!"

"Everything purchased after October twelfth, 2018, was bought using capital diverted from the primary R&D fund," Clara stated flatly, stepping over a pile of garments with effortless elegance. "Which means every single luxury item in this penthouse, down to the diamond earrings on your lobes, legally belongs to the corporation. And since I control the corporation..." Clara paused, letting a razor-sharp smile touch her lips. "...they belong to me."

Marcus stepped forward, gesturing toward the master bedroom doors behind them. "If you refuse to cooperate, ma’am, we will be forced to inventory every item currently on your person. I suggest you remove the jewelry and hand it over voluntarily."

Teresa gasped, clutching her throat as if protecting her pearls from a thief, glaring at Clara with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred. David slowly reached down to his wrist, his fingers trembling as he unclasped a limited-edition platinum chronometer, laying it gently on the counter like a soldier surrendering his sword.

Clara watched him place the watch down, her expression softening for a fraction of a second into something dangerously unreadable. She stepped forward, picking up the heavy platinum timepiece, and dropped it into her pocket with a metallic clink.

"Pack your things, David," Clara whispered softly, leaning in close enough for him to smell the expensive jasmine perfume he had once bought her. "You have exactly twenty minutes before the local authorities arrive to execute the arrest warrants for financial fraud."
