Chapter 7 - The New Management

The manila envelope made a crisp, authoritative sound as Clara pulled the heavy parchment documents from inside. The kitchen was suffocatingly quiet now, save for the muffled sounds of the private security contractors boxing up Teresa’s designer coats in the master suite. David remained slumped against the base of the marble island, his blue button-down shirt wrinkled and stained with sweat, staring vacantly at the polished floor tiles where his entire life had just been dismantled.
Harrison, the senior partner, adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and glanced down at David with a look of profound disappointment. "You had every advantage, David. Your father gave you the keys to a kingdom, and you treated it like a casino."
"Shut up," David whispered, his voice trembling with a toxic blend of humiliation and rage. "You don't know anything about what it took to keep this company afloat during the market downturn!"
"On the contrary," a smooth, calm voice echoed from the private elevator foyer.
Everyone turned to see a tall, impeccably dressed woman in a sharp navy blazer stepping out of the elevator, flanked by two junior corporate analysts carrying armloads of digital auditing equipment. It was Julianna Vance, David’s estranged cousin whom Teresa and David had legally banished from the company six years ago under false pretenses of embezzlement.
Teresa shrieked, scrambling up from the ottoman like a cornered animal. "What is she doing here?! This is private property! Security! Throw this thief out of the penthouse!"
Marcus, the lead security contractor, didn't even twitch. He stood his ground by the kitchen island, his arms crossed over his chest, completely ignoring Teresa’s frantic commands.
Julianna walked past Teresa without sparing her a single glance, her heels clicking rhythmically against the marble floor. She stopped directly in front of Clara, offering a respectful nod before turning her sharp, intelligent gaze toward David.
"Hello, cousin," Julianna said, her voice dripping with cool sarcasm. "I hear you’ve been doing a wonderful job managing the corporate assets into the ground. Good thing Aunt Clara had the foresight to reinstate me as Chief Operating Officer yesterday morning."
David’s jaw dropped. He looked from Julianna to Clara, his brain struggling to process the sheer scale of the chessboard maneuver that had been executed right beneath his nose. "You... you and Clara were working together? All this time?"
"We never stopped working together, David," Clara replied smoothly, stepping up beside Julianna and resting a hand on the younger woman’s shoulder. "You and your mother were so busy counting your unearned millions and plotting my quiet disposal that you didn't even notice the quarterly audits were being routed directly through Julianna’s secure compliance firm."
Julianna pulled a sleek tablet from her leather folio, tapping the screen to display a comprehensive list of every unauthorized wire transfer David had initiated over the past thirty-six months. "Over twelve million dollars siphoned into private accounts, David. Shell companies in the Caymans, luxury sports cars registered under fictitious subsidiaries, and undocumented real estate holdings in Palm Beach. The federal prosecutor didn't even need our help to build the case—your own digital paper trail did all the heavy lifting."
Teresa collapsed back onto the ottoman, burying her face in her hands as silent, bitter tears finally began to stream down her cheeks. "It’s a conspiracy... a total conspiracy against my family..."
"Your family legacy ended the day your son signed away his voting rights as collateral for an emergency bridge loan he desperately tried to hide from the board," Julianna stated coldly.

Just then, the private elevator chimed once more. The doors slid open to reveal two federal marshals in dark tactical vests, their badges gleaming under the bright modern kitchen lights.
