Chapter 7 - The Confession Under Duress

Maya descended the stairs with measured, deliberate steps, her high heels making a sharp, echoing rhythm against the hardwood. She didn't make a sound to announce her presence, but the palpable chill in the air caused Marcus to freeze mid-motion as he tried to zip an overstuffed duffel bag.
He slowly straightened up, wiping a bead of nervous sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand. Chloe stood beside him, clutching a designer knockoff tote bag, her eyes darting toward the front door like a trapped animal.
"You're not leaving yet," Maya said, her voice cutting through the open space with absolute chilling authority.
Marcus let out a nervous, high-pitched laugh, forcing a bright, synthetic smile to his face. "Maya! Come on, sis. We were just... you know, packing up like you asked. Giving you your space."
"You forgot something," Maya replied calmly, reaching into her blazer pocket. She pulled out the matte-black electronic key fob and dropped it onto the glass coffee table with a sharp clack.
Marcus stared at the small piece of plastic, and all the color instantly drained from his face, leaving his skin a sickly, ash-grey tone. Chloe gasped, dropping her tote bag to the floor as the contents spilled everywhere.
"Where did you get that?" Marcus stammered, his voice cracking into a pathetic falter.
"Found it in the nursery," Maya lied smoothly, watching his reaction like a hawk. "Which is fascinating, considering it's a Level Four security pass for the R&D wing of my company. A wing that only my top-tier engineers and executive board members can access."
Marcus stumbled backward, his knees buckling until he collapsed heavily onto the edge of the sofa. "I... I can explain. It’s not what you think, Maya. I was set up!"
"Set up by whom?" Maya stepped closer, towering over him with a glare that could freeze fire. "The loan sharks? The guys you owe twenty grand to for your underground poker debts?"
"They said they'd wipe my slate clean if I just plugged a little flash drive into one of your mainframe computers," Marcus blurted out, tears springing to his eyes as he clutched at his hair in absolute panic. "They swore nothing bad would happen! They said it was just internal testing software!"
Chloe stepped forward, desperately trying to distance herself from the sinking ship. "Don't look at me, Maya! I told him not to do it! I told him his sister would find out and destroy us!"
"Shut up, Chloe! You were the one who wanted to buy a new Mercedes in cash!" Marcus screamed, lunging toward her before catching himself and turning back to Maya with pleading hands. "Maya, please! You have to help me. If the police get involved, I'm going away for ten years!"
Maya stared down at her younger brother, feeling an immense, heavy sorrow replace her anger. She had built a fortress of success, but she had failed to realize that the greatest threat to her empire wasn't external enemies; it was the weak-willed family member she had coddled for a decade.
"The police aren't going to get involved, Marcus," Maya said quietly, her expression hardening into stone.
Marcus let out a massive sigh of relief, sagging against the sofa cushions. "Thank God... Oh, Maya, thank you, I swear I'll never—"

"I'm not calling the police," Maya interrupted, her tone freezing the air in the room. "I'm calling the FBI's cyber crimes division directly. Federal industrial espionage isn't handled by local cops."
