Chapter 6 - The Corporate Trojan Horse

Maya turned the sleek, matte-black electronic key fob over in her hand, the embossed silver logo of her own multi-national tech corporation glowing faintly under the nursery lamp. Her heart skipped a beat, a cold spike of adrenaline replacing the exhaustion in her veins. This wasn't just a domestic freeloading situation anymore. This was a corporate security breach.

The R&D wing of her company housed millions of dollars in proprietary biometric software and experimental hardware designs—secrets that rival corporations had been trying to infiltrate for over two years. And the key fob granting access to that restricted floor was currently sitting in the nursery of her private home, dropped by a man who claimed to be a simple debt collector.

Maya walked noiselessly to the nursery window, drawing the heavy velvet curtains back just an inch. Below, parked across the street under the dim amber glow of a municipal streetlight, the black sedan with tinted windows was still idling. The driver wasn't leaving; he was waiting.

She pulled out her corporate phone, bypassing her personal line entirely, and dialed a direct, encrypted emergency number.

"Director Vance," a crisp, automated-sounding male voice answered on the second ring.

"David, it's Maya," she said, keeping her voice low and steady so as not to disturb her sleeping son in the crib. "I need an immediate remote audit of the Level Four R&D wing logs for the past seventy-two hours."

There was a brief pause on the line, the faint sound of rapid keystrokes clicking in the background. "Maya? It's past ten o'clock. Is everything alright?"

"Just run the logs, David," she pressed, her stern tone leaving no room for argument. "Check every badge swipe, every biometric override, and specifically look for any unauthorized guest badge activations."

A heavy sigh echoed through the receiver. "Alright, give me twenty seconds... Okay, pulling up the security registry now. Stand by... That's strange."

"What's strange?" Maya’s grip tightened around the plastic key fob.

"According to the system registry, your brother’s badge was used to access the Level Four server room at 2:14 AM yesterday morning," David said, his voice dropping into a tone of intense professional alarm. "He downloaded three encrypted architecture files onto an external drive."

Maya closed her eyes, a wave of profound betrayal washing over her. Marcus wasn't just a lazy moocher living off her charity. He had been used as a corporate Trojan horse to steal from her company.

"Lock down the entire floor digitally," Maya commanded, her voice dropping an octave into absolute CEO mode. "Revoke all secondary credentials instantly. I want a complete freeze on those specific patent files."

"Done," David replied instantly. "Maya... what is going on? This is federal industrial espionage territory."

"I know exactly what it is," Maya said, her eyes snapping open as she stared at the nursery door. "And I'm going to handle it right now."

She hung up without saying goodbye, slipped the key fob securely into her blazer pocket, and walked out of the nursery, quietly clicking the door shut behind her.

As she reached the top of the grand staircase and looked down into the brightly lit foyer, she saw Marcus and Chloe standing by the front door, furiously whispering while packing their belongings into oversized plastic trash bags.
