Chapter 10 - The Backdoor Exit

Marcus fumbled blindly in the dim emergency light until his fingers brushed against the cold metal of the key ring. He snatched it up as if it were a burning coal, scrambling to his feet with desperate urgency.

"Chloe, grab the bags—forget the designer shoes, just grab the clothes!" Marcus hissed, hauling his terrified fiancée up by her armpits.

Chloe stumbled forward, her designer silk robe dragging across the floor as she grabbed two bulging plastic trash bags filled with their hastily packed belongings. They moved with frantic, trembling energy, completely stripped of the arrogant entitlement they had carried into the house just hours earlier.

Maya stood motionless near the base of the staircase, her arms crossed over her black blazer, watching them scramble toward the kitchen service door like common thieves fleeing a crime scene. She felt no pity—only a profound, cold sense of closure.

"Marcus," Maya called out quietly just as he reached for the brass handle of the kitchen door.

Marcus froze, turning his pale, sweat-slicked face back toward her, his chest heaving with terror. "What? What else do you want? We're leaving! We're doing exactly what you said!"

"If you ever come within five miles of this house again," Maya said, her voice dropping into a register so chillingly calm that it made the air feel heavier, "I won't call the police. I won't call federal agents. I will handle you myself."

Marcus swallowed hard, unable to meet her piercing gaze. He nodded once, frantically turned the deadbolt, and shoved the back door open. Cool night air rushed into the kitchen, carrying the distant sound of blaring police sirens wailing down the main boulevard.

"They're coming!" Chloe shrieked, darting out into the dark service alleyway with her plastic bags trailing behind her.

Marcus scrambled out after her, slamming the heavy wooden service door shut behind them with a resounding thud.

Maya stood alone in the quiet kitchen. The sirens grew louder, their red and blue emergency strobes flashing in rhythmic patterns against the sealed steel shutters over the windows. She walked over to the smart panel, pressed a single button to deactivate the emergency lockdown, and watched as the steel shutters smoothly retracted upward, flooding the modern living room with warm, golden indoor light once more.

She walked up the grand staircase to check on her sleeping son, stepping into the peaceful nursery where the toddler rested undisturbed in his crib. Maya gently adjusted his blanket, letting out a long, shuddering breath.

Then, her phone buzzed sharply on the bedside table. It wasn't David from corporate security. It was an unknown international number flashing on the screen.
